Help! Child started meds/getting no sleep | ADHD Information

Share

My 5 year old DD was recently diagnosed with ADHD and ODD.  We started her on 5ml of Methylin a few days ago.  I've only been giving it to her 2 times per day (instead of 3 times) because I was nervous about how it would affect her sleep.  The 2nd dose is given at 1pm and I was told it would be out of her system in 4 hours.

DD has been going to sleep at night.  Staying asleep is a major problem.  She has been waking up at 2/3am and is not going back to sleep, eventhough she is trying.  She's been up since 3am this morning and is still going strong 14 hours later.  I am exhausted and can't imagine going through another night of this.  I am also very concerned for her since she needs sleep more than I do.

Will the sleeping improve after time or should I consider taking her off of this medication?  What's the point of having her on Methylin if it's only going to make her more tired and irritable?  I am thinking about not giving her any medication tomorrow to see if it makes a difference with her staying asleep at night.

Any advice/insight re: this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Usually the meds cause sleeplessness at fuirts, then it diminishes. IIt could also be the wrong med/dose for her, I would speak to the Psychiatrist who prescribed it if you are concerned.

IMO benadryl works wonders also.

Thank you edbson!

I only gave her one dose yesterday morning and she slept awesome last night.  I'll give this another week and see what happens.  I also need to see if it helps with school.

How long until the sleeplessness should subside?  If it is still an issue a week from now, should I contact her Dr. to see if we should switch meds/dose?  Or do I need to give it more time than that?

We are already giving her 3mg of melatonin.  I do not know if benadryl can be added to the mix.  I will defintely look into it.  Thanks again!
