Newbie here...anyway my 7yr old son was dx last spring and has been on meds since. He goes to a private catholic school which we like but not sure if it's the best since they do not have any specialized learning in place for children with ADHD. The only thing they do have that he is in is Title I (reading assistance). I have heard public schools have programs for children with specialized needs and not sure if this is the way to go?? The other question is that when he is on his meds he does very well in school, we just got his midterm progress report and he got all A's and B's...big improvement since meds. I think the thing that concerns me is that he is not alloted enough time for tests and things and I know he has social problems (very shy, not many friends). I guess what I am asking is not sure what advantages the public school may have to accomadate his ADHD compared with private and just getting Title I and that the teachers are aware of his condition. Hope this wasnt too confusing...there is just a lot I am still learning. Any input would be great. Thanks!!
a lot of private schools will give classroom accomodations. Why not figure out what you think he needs and call a meeting. They may be willing to do what he needs. Like preferential seating, longer time for tests, maybe additional homework time, those kinds of things. If you are worried about a coexisiting LD or he needs significant social support you may need public shcool ofr those kinds of special ed type accomdations. Check out wrightslaw (you can google it) and look at common classroom accomodations . Not all publci schools ar all that accomodating either.
