Gain weight out of control | ADHD Information

ALl antip[sychotics can cause weight gain, and my DD even gains on stims. I would say et right, exercise enad watch your carbs.

I can't stop gaining weight and had to buy new pants that is 2 pairs and went up one size to 38 x 32

I called my psychriatrist so when she calls me back i am going to tell her.
i gained 3 or 4 pounds in 3 weeks.
i now wewigh 188. I am so worried.
I take risperdal which can  cause weight gain but it is out of control.

Please tell me what i should do and i am taking the risperdal in the morning and  I also take ritalin which doesn't cause weight gain and zoloft which i am sure that wouldn't cause weight gain.

Let me know if you or your child or anybody has taken risperdal and if that has happen to them.

I need advice.

I agree with edbson. Get plenty of excercise and watch your calories. Eat everything in moderation. The Risperdal increases your appetite. In my child's case, that is a postive thing. The stims made him lose weight.

Good luck. Talk to your Dr., and mark out a plan. You'll do fine.

i feel for you.  I would suggest you make a point telling your doc if you have a history of heart disease, diabetes or any other health issue that will and/or can be brought on early in life by weight in your family.  That might give the doc a change of heart about changing your meds. Hope this helps you.

Rissperdal can cause weight gain. It did for my youngest when she was on it last year, which in her case is a bonus. Here is some info that might help:

Geodon does not seem to add weight and might be an alternative for risperdal.

vickie39484.4094212963I am not worried anymore. I am off that mediicne and now take abilify. 5 mgsI am glad to hear it and that you found something else to try. Risperdal is an antipsychotic,. not a stimulant. Is Risperdal a stimulant?  I'm wondering because my daughter is so skinny even before meds and now has zero appetite on Vyvanese.  I'm thinking mabye she could switch to Risperdal. The med may be increasing your appetite, but it is not technically what is causing your weight gain.  What is causing you to gain weight is excess calories over and above what you are burning.

Start jotting down your calories eaten on a notecard.  Pay closer attention to food labels on what you are eating. Pay closer attention to the QUANTITY of food you are eating, i.e. portion size.   Most people just eat without even thinking about portion size....and the calories add up FAST!     Make wiser subsitutions for high calorie foods.  The only way to stop the weight gain is to either cut back calories, or increasing your calories burned (exercise and body movement).

I lost 42 lbs over about 7 months by just watching and jotting down calories in, and increasing calories out....via sensible exercise.  It is hard, but it is the only way to truly lose body fat and keep it off.
