taking tenex with stimulant | ADHD Information

My son started tenex a week ago.  It has been a wonderful help at night.  I give him half a pill at 5:00 p.m.  He is much more cooperative and then he just gets his 18 mg concerta in the morning.  I think the tenex has calmed him down at school too.  He is enjoying playing with other kids more and just getting along better with everyone.  It's been amazing with his rebound affects that were so bad at night  I am just praying it doesn't stop working.  I'm afraid to get my hopes up anymore. We give 2mg tenex AM and at night with the option of a 1/2 mg after school (or I give 1mg of the night dose early). She only gets it after school when she will be having a challenging social function in the evening.

For those who have experience with adding tenex to a stimulant, I know you start low and go up slowly but once you reach your optimum dose, are you dosing twice a day? It seems like most people give it to their children in the morning and before bed. Does this give afternoon coverage? My dd on stimulants alone usually takes an afternoon booster of a stimulant for homework and for behavior. It's a must if she is doing anything social in the afternoon. I'm afraid that if you have to give the tenex before bed that her afternoon/evening won't be covered. It seems like most people using tenex with a stimulant do not give an afternoon booster of the stim. Am I right?

We're struggling with what to do. DD does well on adderall academically and her afternoons and evenings are good too. I don't have to give her a booster every day but when I do, it lasts until bedtime and she sleeps great! The only problem is that she doesn't do so well socially on adderall. She is not very conversational. She seems to do a little better on the concerta socially but she doesn't do as well academically and her afternoon/evenings are not great. She requires a booster everyday with concerta and doesn't sleep well either. I usually give her a focalin booster and it wears off before bedtime and she is bouncing off the walls NOT sleeping. We are talking with her dr about adding tenex to one of these stimulants to see if it helps her out.

Thanks Jo

when we used Tenex, we only used it at night as it can be sedating. I have a child who can fall asleep in the middle of the day when taking a stmulant so we KNEW that it had to be at nightMy daughter is currently taking Tenex with Concerta.  We do 1/2 a dose in the am and 1/2 in the pm.   For my daughter,  at our current dose, it hasn't been sedating.  It does make her a little more manageable at bed time but she is still going to bed at the same time - pretty late in comparison to most kids.    I think she is sleeping more soundly and doesn't require melatonin to help her fall asleep when it is time.

I think her tics have lessened some, but still present.
