New and have med questions | ADHD Information

Seems like he is on too many drugs. I'm not familiar with Imipramine but the other 3 meds he is all are all antidepressants. I don't understand why your doctor has an 11 yr old on so many depression meds and at such high doses too. You might want to get a second opinion sounds like your son is overmedicated. Just because he is on a large quantity of meds doesn't mean they will work any better then one the hard part is just finding the right one.

Also if you decide to take your son off of these meds make sure you take him off slowly by tapering the doses. All Antidepressants cause withdrawal when you stop them. Effexor is notorious for having a very tough withdrawal period so your son will probably feel pretty horrible while he is going through that. I know from experience that effexor is not fun to come off of.

My advice is if you are going to change meds again let your son detox his system before starting anything new. Otherwise you won't know if the new med works or not all you will see is how the withdrawal is affecting his behavoir.

Hi, I am a mother of 2. My 11 year old son is ADHD and been on many different combinations of meds since the approx age of 5.  Currently he is on Depakote 500mg at night, Imipramine 30 mg at night, Wellbrutrin (can't remember dose of that right now), and Effexor 120 mg.  Is anyone else on this combination or even 1 of these drugs for ADHD?  I have talked to the MD every time we go in and express my concern regarding the number of drugs, dosages etc.  He was on Ritalin and has recently been taken off that all together.  He has behavior problems also at school.  We have been doing counseling for about 2 years.  I think about this little guy and get sick to my stomach with worry.  Any help, advice etc would be great.

Thanks!

Hi there

I am sure no expert on medications, but it seems to me that they have him on alot.  It seems like the meds he is taking are prescribed for depression as some of the medicine you mentioned are ones my husband used to or now takes for depression.  He is 200 lbs and is taking 150 mg of Effexor.  It seems that 120 mg for an 11 year old is alot.

Like I said, I am certainly no expert, but just concerned.  There is nothing wrong with asking for a second opinion from another doctor.

Yes- definitely get a second opinion and look for a doc who is an expert in ADD/ADHD and who knows his medications. If you happen to be in the NY area, I can recommend someone! Is your son exhibiting signs of depression? Why did he come off Ritilin?
