Is it like in the evenings when they get cranky and start acting up after their meds wear off???
I hear some parents use this term and I think my son goes through a rebound period. I hear also some parents giving their kids chocolate or soda..does this really work??
Rebound is the period when the meds wear off, usually in the late afternoon. The child can be cranky, irritable, shortempered, angry , cry. Most stims cause some sort of rebound. From what I have learned/read, some more so than others. It can also lessen as the body gets used to the medication.
My son has some rebound with vyvanse. It was much worse in the beginning(about 3 months ago). Now its maybe once a week or so. Also worse if he is tired, hungry, or just out of sorts. The ladies on this board have lots of great ideas on how to help them thru rebound. The chocolate or coke seems to take the edge off(the caffeine helps). Also exercise, protein snacks and keeping things peaceful seem to help.
With my son I make sure he has a snack as soon as we get home. He usualy doesnt eat lunch so this is mandatory. Then I will give him a 1/2 glass of coke and try to keep things peaceful. It usually doesnt last long, at least in my case.
Hope this helps.
For us rebound was extreme silliness as the meds wore off. We did use caffeine. My daughter is older and she would drink a cup of tea. Occasionally I'd let her have a coke. Chocolate works, caffeine and sugar. High pretine food is usally helpful, and vigorous excercise. For some it's terrible and outweighs the benefit of the med. They either change meds or add an afternoon booster of short acting med or something like Guanfacine. Again everyone is different, but you correct in the meaning. My son goes through rebound too. He is on 20 mgs metadate cd, and he gets very emotional. he cries, gets angry, defensive...and its kinda weird. I havent found a solution yet. Right now, i'm trying to deal with him not eating enough so I am going to buy some carnation instant breakfast and see if he likes that.
