Peeling fingertips-Daytrana side effect? | ADHD Information

Thanks for responding.  We live in Florida so the cold/dry climate is not an issue.  I am in a quandry about this. OneHeart39504.4517939815if he has his fingers in his mouth this time of year, they are probably totally chapped. You could try white cotton gloves when he is home to discourage them going in his mouth. Not sure what you can do about school though.I noticed my son (ADHD 11yo)chewing on his fingers and when I looked closer I was shocked to see the skin from each fingertip was peeling.  I don't know if its a med. side effect or nutritional deficiency..or what.  Its very bizzare.  He's currently on the 15mg Daytrana patch.  It has been working very well for him.

Thanks again to all who responded.  The pediatrician looked at it and suggested it might be a repetitive activity as in keyboard/game controller.  She said it is not a nutritional deficiency as this would be indicated by nail growth as well.  His nails are normal.  Doesn't seem to be a known related side effect to Daytrana, therefore I am apt to think it is the repetitive activity although my son only plays xbox on weekends and even that is time regulated.  He doesn't play enough- or so I thought- to warrant skin removal.  Hmmm....

Is this an ADHD related habit?  I have chewed my nails, cuticles, fingertips, occasionally even KNUCKLES as long as I can remember.  The compulsion hasn't lessened or gotten worse since I started medication last year.  I figured it was something I'd always be stuck with.  I eat a pretty healthy diet so I don't think it's a nutritional deficiency.  I've never tried to get help for it, but it's a pretty ugly habit.  If you are able to stop this behavior, let us know how you did it.

Good luck!

Interesting observation that your son's problem could be related to the medication.

I am not on a methelphenadate based medication but have noticed a similar problem with the skin around both my finger nails and toe nails.  I had not thought of it's on set in relation to when I started taking stimulents but if definetly was not a problem prior to that.  I probably first started noticing it a little over a year after I started taking d-apmphetimine.  So, could there be a corrilation?  Maybe the decrease in appitite has something to do with causing some sort of deficiancy?

Let us know if you find any information about this.

Call Shire and report the issue.

They can tell you if this is a known side effect.  If not they will log it and report it to the FDA.  If there are lots of similar complaints they will get back to you.

Their contact number is on the daytrana website www.daytrana.com
