My sons has been on two diffrent meds for his adhd. He was taking concerta 27mg. It was great BUT he had no appitite and insomnia. He's almost 9 dignossed at age 5 started meds around age 6. Any who the doctor said that we should try something new because she didnt like the side effects. SOO we started Focalin xr. First off it was very hard to find around here. Secondly he was becoming very impulsive. They upped it to 15 mg. Not bad but still very implusive. Had to constintly remind him to think before he acted Sayings like Gavin dont sit on the dog were becoming a very regular thing in the house. So again they upped it to 20mg. Then the scary stuff began within 3 days I couldnt stand it any more the crash at the end of the day was awful. He was yelling at everyone, literaly bouncing off the walls and the dogs and his sister. He became a full time job. I called the dr told this med stinks its not working I want him off. So that was Friday. The doctor mailed me some info on the 2 meds that she thinks might work for him. Adderall or Strateria. I think I am leaning towards the stratteria. Adderall seems to still have that crash I want to avoid. I also like the idea of a non stimulant. Any suggestions. I have been reading the posts but there are so many I didnt know where to start so thats why I am asking Stratteria VS Adderall which is better for you. GZ is roughly 70 pounds he has had other medication sensitivities in the past. So i do want to avoid those. Also I am looking for a med that will help him with his impilsiveness that is his BIG problem.
THANKS
ps pardon my spelling!
gzsmom39510.8775347222Well,, Straterra is a Norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, and Adderall is a stimulant med, two VERY different meds. DD did well on Strat, ate well ( gained actually) and slept well, no impulsiveness and focused well. Adderall was a nightmare, whiney, irritable, generally grouchy, didn't sleep, and didn't eat.
HIs range for Strat would be 35-55 mgs, Target for his weight.
Thanks
We had the same experience. My daughter is on Strattera now, and doing pretty well. She eats normally, sleeps normally, has even coverage over 24 hours. It's a more subtle change than the dramatic difference of going no meds to stimulant, but we're having a great year, especially socially. She also was moody, and "flat" on Adderall, no appetite.
