HELP - tics | ADHD Information

My son is 11 and currently on meds. Over the past six weeks or so he has developed this tic in which he clears his throat constantly. The school, his coach, relatives / friends are all asking about his "cough". Any suggestions to help him out.

Thanks

Sometimes requires a change in meds, and usually stops when meds are stopped. yeah for my daughter any time she's on a stimulant she gets an eye blinking tic. Stop the stims, blinking stops. Some people add Tenex and this can help occasionally, but if your siggy is up to date, he's not on stim? I'm not sure you'd add Tenex to his other meds.

My son is on concerta and tenex. He also clears his throat, more when the med's are taking effect.

I told his prescribing doctor and he said to just ignore it.

To date, no one has ever said anything, including DS.

My daughter has eye blinking issue from time to time.  We added Tenex to her concerta and it's helped some.  I really like the two together.   Her tics are very anxiety related (usually the worse when her meds were wearing off) and I think the tenex helps take some of that edge off.  The tics aren't totally gone but the frequency and severity have decreased.

We been using the combo for about 9 weeks and it is working well for use.  (She's was on concerta alone for 2-3 months and prior to that Ritalin LA for about a year.)

My daughter had the throat clearing tic before she was on meds.  It lasted just over a year and went away on its own. The school was kind enough to ignore it for the most part.

Another of my children has a facial tic and is not on any meds- so don't assume it is medication related- although it appears that is the case many times- it isn't necissarily so.

Good luck.

my daughter is on concerta, she has always has tic's, i was told by my doctor it can get worse when they have a infection, and take her off, i was told to ingore , if you make a fuss it will get worse.

My stepson constantly clears his throat, and hes not currently on any meds.  He will be 16 this year, but my own personal opinion is that he should still be on meds.

Wish I could help shed some light on a solution, but unfortunately, I can't Im afraid.  Good luck finding an answer xxx

Just adding my experience. Before meds my son had a breathing tic. I haven't read about this one on this board but, he would say it was hard to breath deeply and he would keep trying to take a full breath. Of course took him to the doctor who said it was a tic, ignore it and it may be replaced by something else.  It did go away  in a week or two. He started Wellbutrin and Ritalin LA and had an eye rolling tic. The doc said ignore it and he only likes to treat tics if they are vocal in nature because it brings more attention to the child.  We stopped Wellbutrin and the tics stopped.  Because this **** med journey never ends, he is now on Vyvanse. It is working VERY well but stay tuned it could all change tomorrow.

I noticed for the first time the other night Trent was sitting at his little table doing his homework and he would jerk for no reason and make a grunt sound. He did this about 5 different times. Not sure if it is a tick or still something from last friday's ordeal.

He's done it a few times here and there since. but not alot.

My son has had many tics and they usually go away. I asked the dr. about them. He asked if it bothered him. He said no. The doctor said then don't worry about it. He's on Ritalin 15mg 2x a day. He's had throat clearing issues, looking up and blinking and now it's looking at his thumbs. They come & go. They don't bother him and we don't say anything. They eventually go away.

I haven't seen many kids on this site on Ritalin. I know the ups and downs of each drug but it's the only one in Canada that we can crush. He can't swallow pills. In fact it's hard to even get him to take ANY medication. My son has been on 30mg of Vyvanse and has experienced a variety of tics that seem to come and go.  He went through a sniffing phase which nearly drove us all crazy, then it was throat clearing, and in the last month it has changed to moving his head and neck around like he is trying to relieve muscle tension.  I'm a bit alarmed at this most recent one and have taken him off the vyvanse for the past 2 weeks now to see if it makes a difference. I'm worried that other kids will start teasing him--it makes him look so odd!   We live overseas so it's not like I can just go see his pediatrician for a consult.

Not sure if I should really be worried because he was ticking before he ever went on meds--except that at the time, we just thought he had allergies.
MOMTOTWO my daughter does the head rolling thing when she is reading and she has done this on and off meds and she has told me because its from tension she gets so worked up about reading and writing that she tenses up. She has had a variety of tics that I ignore when I can, sometimes the throat clearing one gets to me and others.... But ask your son if he feels tension it maybe something other then the meds totally causing it. Though the meds started her doing it she always did it when she was doing those two things, but now that she's off meds she continues it....
