So here we are - 1 1/2 hrs past normal bedtime - and my son is still wide awake. He has been up twice for something to drink - even though he had a drink before he went to bed. This time he said he needed to go potty - but he is in the bathroom singing. I know they are just excuses because he can't go to sleep.
I am thinking about buying a white noise machine tomorrow. Anyone had experience with these? Any recomendations of a good one?
I know when my non-adhd dd was a baby we had one in her room because she had trouble staying asleep. The slightest noise would wake her. The machine kept her from hearing everything else so she stayed asleep better.
I am thinking that if my son can't hear everything that is still going on in the house - and being interested in it - and distracted by it - that he will go to sleep easier.
Any thoughts?
I got one of these for my son who also couldn't sleep. He is 8. The first few nights he enjoyed listening to the water and the lullaby selections. He did seem to fall asleep faster. Now, when I go in his room in the morning it is turned off. Soooo- I think it isn't really worth it. Maybe you could get a cheap CD player with earphones and put in a classical CD and play it.The water sounds amde DD get up to go to the bathroom more often. We use the white noise, and melatonin....works wonderfully.I have a box fan in my dd's room that I put on when she goes to sleep. It's perfect for us because she can't hear any other noise at night. Baths really help at night, too.
We give ds a warm bath w/ epsom salt. Do a short video or read a book. Then I rock him for 15 to 20 minutes. He is not asleep most of the time when I lay him down, but it calms him and gives us a few minutes of closeness at the end of the day. We also use white noise.
I am a big fan of the rocking chair. I was rocked as a child and remember the warm secure feeling it gave me. I rocked my oldest until he was 6 1/2 ( i was pregnant and my belly got too big to have him on my lapHe is 12 1/2 and goes to sleep on his own. If he has trouble he listens to books on tape.
Will just started using his humidifier for background noise again. I don't think it's helping him go to sleep but maybe keeping him asleep..
Concerta could do it. If that is the case, you could go to a shorter-acting med.I would not give your son anything like Meltonin talk to the doctor first and formost for they can direct you in a safe way. My daughter enjoys music at bedtime so we got her a CD player of her own and since she is picky about music hubby burned her a CD with her music she still has problems once in a while but stays in the room doing the right thing.I bought the white noise machine yesterday and we tried it last night. I put it on ocean sounds - like waves. He went to sleep quick and didn't get up once with any excuses! Now, that might be because of the machine, or it might be that the 2 previous nights he didn't sleep well and was exhausted last night. Either way, I will take it!
Let's hope it works again tonight!
