If it were simply a matter of "learning to focus" we'd all be a lot happier to not have to medicate our children. That's like telling an epileptic,"Learn not to have siezures."  ADHD is a medical issue, not simply a behavioral one. It sounds to me like you need to find some good resources that you can give this teacher to educate her about what adhd is and what it isn't. "Learn to focus"... why didn't we think of that???!!!! BPQW39519.6224421296 My son has been on medication for 1 1/2 years now. I have had to increase his medication only twice. I just had a mtg with his teacher and it seems that he has had very good progress with the IEP program he is in. His teacher was telling me that he has a hard time with the transition of things. He seems to loss focus and is lost. I see the same thing at home at times. he forgets a lot. And for his reading, he is reading but isn't getting the concepts of what he is reading. I was wondering if anyone had ideas about how to help with these two issues? I read a topic about marbles and behavior. I am going to try this, but I need more. Like his teacher said he has to learn how to be able to focus even when there is distraction around him. He cannot learn to focus with distractions around him if he is not  ABLE to focus, that's what the IEP is for, to minimize distractions. ( or should be, I would revise the IEP). It sounds like a med problem, maybe time fior a revisit of dosage, and a Psych visit. Thank you, I have mtg with the IEP 3/26 to talk about this. I am looking into mental health. Are there therapist that deal with helping children with adhd and focusing? He is not going to be able to "learn to focus with distractions around him". There are several classroom accomodations that can help with this, like sitting in the front of the class (near the teacher for redirection), taking his tests out of the class in a resource room or somewhere to remove him from the distractions. wrightslaw.com has a whole list of possible classroom accomodations. Might be worth looking into it and finding the ones your son would benefit from and get them into his IEP. I agree with edbson that maybe a med check will help. sometimes a small dose increase can work magic.
