Both ADD/ADHD have a strong genetic component and if your child has ADD/ADHD than it's very likely that either you or your spouse have the disorder as well.
I have ADD and my husband has ADHD (This man can literally not sit still for even 30 seconds)
Do you have ADD/ADHD?
Or is your spouse the one who has the disorder?
Or has it skipped a generation, but one of the grandparents may have had it....and probably didn't even know.
I am a grandma with adhd, my dh is adhd, 2 0f our children are adhd and 4 of our 11 grandchildren are adhd. I'm the add one (inattentive, no H). And we believe our 8 year old has it. We've suspected it for a few years now. I feel like I'm looking in the mirror sometimes when he becomes drastically unfocused and clumsy. My DD's ADHD is not genetic/hereditary, it is Auto immune. She was diagnosed with ADHD related to PANDAS at age 8, 2 years ago. Noone that I am ware of in either dh ir my family has ADHD, although a couple of us are Dyslexic. MY daughter is ad/hd inatentive. My guess is that I am ad/hd and that others in my family were judging by the amount of self medicating we have done.My hubby and his family all have it, along with other disorders such as depression, panic attacks, phobias, etc.
I am just hyper, major multi tasker.
My son's dad definitely has ADHD; he was labelled hyperactive as a child,I am ADD (DX in 1982- when I was 12 and few people had heard of ADD) my husband is not ADD- We have 3 children.
DD 12 ADHD-PI
DS 11 ADHD (very H)
DS 5 not DX with ADHD but Dx PDD-NOS and is very innattentive compared to peers- so may be likely DX'd at some point in the future
I am a true beleiver in the genetic component. I do not beleive that either of my parents has it though.
