My son's sleep is like clockwork (no pun intended!!).  He goes to bed at 9pm and is up at 6:30 or 6:45 am. That's 9.5 hours or so. I think that's enough, because he never sleeps longer regardless of what's going on that day. If he was tired, he'd sleep more. He's 9, BTW. Also, he stopped napping very early as a baby, which his doctor told me was fine because attentive babies (the only time in his life he's been called that!) tend to learn more, faster.BPQW39520.6600347222

When my dd was on Vyvanse it made her very irritable (which is one of the reaasons we changed meds) and she did have a difficult time going to sleep.  Now she is on a med at night to help her sleep, so she goes to sleep around 9 and is awake about 8.  This can fluctuate an hour either way.

She also doesn't eat much during the day ... mid-day is the worst, I think when they are just not hungry.  She eats a lot at night time and I also let her eat whatever whenever.  She's so thin.

As a very child my daughter slept 12 hr at night with sometimes a 2-4 nap during day. She's ten now. On meds now she still sleeps from about 9:30 to 7:00 on school days and not much different on weekends. She, like myself, won't sleep past first light much so total sleep time goes way down in summer. This change doen't seem to matter, maybe the fact that she's not dealing with "the dreaded education system" (her words)  let's her get by on less sleep.
Lot's of studies and books in last 10-15 yrs. raise concerns about our lack of sufficiant sleep and impact it's having.
We do notice slight difference in her sleep patterns since starting med 5 mos. ago and another slight chage when we switched her to patch from metdate. Don't know if it's all med related or just getting older and not needing as much sleep. She hasn't got into the sleep til noon teenage  routine yet, anyone have insights on what lies ahead for us in this respect? Do kids on meds. (stimulants) ever get into typical teenage sleep late patterns?

How many hours sleep is your child getting and how many do you feel is enough?  Bryce has been on Vyvanse for only a week and has shown great improvment already.  But this morning it was worse than without meds.  He has had a hard time going to sleep at night and eating.  I gave him .5 mg of meletonin around 9:15 and he was asleep in about 20 mins.  We tried to get away with out it but no. The night before that was about the same.  So about 8.5 hours of sleep.  He is 7 and I don't think that is enough.  Opinions..........?

He's eating is alot less than normal.  He's not eating lunch at all.  Breakfast wasn't good this morning about 2-3 oz of a carnation instant breakfast, and dinner last night was two slices of cheese and 2 reece cups.  I am letting him eat whatever whenever.

Could he be irriatable from not eating and lack of sleep, just like any other child would be?

Thanks

Sleeplessness, and poor appetite are common with stims. My DD is 10 1/2 and sleeps about 10-11 hours a night on school days, 12-14 on weekends.

He is probably irritable becuase of lack of sleep, and food. I know I would be.

my son has a real hard time with sleep even with no med days, last night i feel asleep and woke up at 1am and josh was still up and he gets up at 7:30am for school. i give him 2 mg melatonin and that no longer works.

My son (Sawyer) was diagnosed at 8, and he is now almost 13 y.o.  We have run the gamut medicinally from Concerta to Focalin to Adderall, and now to Vyvanse.  Each type of medication helped for a while, but it seems that his body builds up a sort of immunity to each, at which point we have to switch to something else.

As far as eating is concerned, Sawyer had lost all appetite and started losing weight rapidly as well.  I have found that, with a little work, this problem can be overcome.  I have come up with the following plan that seems to work very well for my son:

Since I'm not around at lunch (when he's at school), I make sure he takes in between 600-800 calories at breakfast.  I prepare two fried eggs, a waffle (the store-bought toaster kind - I'm not the June Cleaver type, unfortunately) with butter and syrup, and one of the those yoghurts with active cultures (it helps his digestion).  Along with this he drinks a can of Ensure w/Fiber (it has lots of calories, vitamins and minerals, and it's not just for old folks anymore!).  It seems like a lot of food for a kid without appetite, but you'd be surprised about how much they can eat before they take their meds.

I've spent months making Sawyer sandwiches w/fruit and a sweet treat to take to school for lunch, only to find out that he gives it away to other kids or just throws it in the garbage.  So now I got buy-in from him to eat one banana for lunch.  It's one of those "perfect" foods with all kinds of nutrients, which are also soothing to the stomach.

By the time he has dinner his meds have mostly worn off, and he eats a good meal.  We eat a lot of stir-fry (brown rice and loads of broccoli, peppers, onions, fresh ginger, etc.), pasta w/tomato sauce, fish, soups, etc., but no meat (not just for Sawyer's benefit; for us it's an ethical choice).  He also drinks glass of V8 Strawberry-Banana juice in the afternoon... a full serving of fruit and vegetables (advertising works!).  ;)

Since I've implemented this routine Sawyer has gained over 7 lbs., and he's now just below his ideal/healthy weight.  I hope this helps!

my daughter only sleeps 8 1/2 hours if I am lucky.  I will not give her anything to make her sleep unless the doctor says so. my son needed 10 hrs of sleep at that age. he recently found my sleeping eyepatch. i had stuffed it away because i never use it. one of those things that covers your eyes when you sleep. he asked if he could use it and LOVES it. says it's helping him fall asleep. he says this is because he can't see all the light in his room. apparently the moon shines thru the closed blinds. who woulda thunk it?

we are on month 2 of vyvanse and in the begining we saw alot of sleeping issues. my son 9, has been on melatonin for years to get him to sleep. he takes 3 mg and out like a light witin about 20 minutes. it is a godsend as he never slept.

i know if I give the stim too late he will have a hard time the next day. If I give the vyvanse at 6:30 am he is good to go. he eats at 6:00 and for the rest of the night. He goes to bed at 8:00pm and with the Melatonin asleep by 8:20-30.
