We did 6 months of Provigil and it was working very well. I noticed a definite improvement the first day. It took us 6 weeks to titrate up to the study dose level. The only side effect we had was weight gain. My son gained 35 pounds in 6 months. We had one month when he gained 9 pounds. I could not keep enought food in the house. The study was ended when one child in the study got a case of Stephen Johnson syndrome. We went back to Adderall XR and a year later he weighed 3 pounds less than the year before and was 5 inches taller.
We have gone to Vyvanse and he has continued to gain weight slowly, a somewhat normal rate.
we went off it. The side effects were terrible for her. Tics at her worst, worse than on traditional stims (except Concerta), she couldnt sleep. It did not affect her appetite either way, although she only took it four days, we really did not like it. Strattera alone is the way to go for us. She was calm and focused and "with it", but the side effects far outeighed the benefit..................once again.............sorry it did not work Diane, my thoughts are with you. I keep thinking my son did the best on zoloft alone(minus the focusing part) but it isn't enough for school. So I get what you mean. I am glad she is happy. It is commonly used for Narcolepsy, is used off label for ADHD, Jet lag, Alzheimers etc. It's being used more and more for kids with ADHD who don't respond to the traditional stims/anti depressants.OK guys, who knows what about Provigil?
We are dropping dd's Strattera back even more and adding a small dose of Provigil starting tomorrow. So she'll be taking both Strattera and Provigil. The Strattera is good, but not quite enough, sooooooooooo we'll just keep on tryin'!!!
hey diane i have used it and loved it for 1 year. it did have some rebound, but overall I couldn't say enough. I ended upping my dose and feaking my body out so they took me off.good luck with all.for my child it caused insomnia. grumpy. emotional. major lack of organization which was never a problem before. no improvement on focus.
thanks guys. I had read what I could find. Can't find too many people that have used it though........they don't like to use it for kids, my daughters older, most kids have found their med by her age.
Well hopefully for her it'll be just what we need...................really cant make her disorganization ANY worse than it is....it's one of her main symptoms............
I am really UNHAPPY. We had the BEST day today. She took the Strattera and Provigil this am, she felt wonderful all day. She was attentive focused, happy, she ate, said she felt great, tonight HORRIBLE tics and urge to pull her eyelashes (she had trichotillomina a year ago on Concerta, but it has completely gone away since we stopped the Concerta, now today I saw her pull and she's rolling her eyes like crazy. I dont even dare give this another day. What a waste of .00 and I JUST am so frustrated. Oh I am with you. she did better yesterday, but tics are back and pretty bad in the evening, really bugging her. She doesnt want to give up yet though. I thought Provigil had less of this kind of side effect. It isnt impacting her appetite at all which is great because traditional stims do. Symptom-wise during the day it seems a nice complement ot the lower dose of Strattera, but in the evenings she is seeing rebound and that is when the tics are worse, but she's "ticcing" all day and we didnt have tics with Strattera alone. I hate not knowing what to do. I'm thinking we'll be going back to Strattera alone, but she seems so "lost" on just the Strattera. Very much in her own world. She was even comlaining of the daydreaming and rushing thoughts. Aaaaagh I just want to scream........we'll probably give it a few more days to see if it subsides some, and she was better yesterday than Saturday evening........but I dont know......It's always these "transition" times that are the hardest. Eventually it will be worked out -- keep the faith! (I guess I should probably listen to my own advice -- easier said than done....).
Hi Diane, I feel for you! It's so hard finding the right balance of meds. We've had a terrible year. My daughter was on focalin for the past two years (the wonder drug for her) but developed tics and weight loss. Since then we've tried about 5 different meds and have now "settled" for Strattera. I love that the side effects aren't an issue but it just doesn't work that great to control her symptoms. I told the neurologist I would stay with it until the end of the school year but now I'm rethinking this. When I see her at after school activities she is so out of control and really not getting much out of things (ballet, girl scouts, etc). I'm just wondering if I'm really doing the right thing for her. My plan was to revisit the stims over the summer before she starts 2nd grade. Not sure now if I can wait that long (for her sake....). Just venting!!wow. i'm sorry to hear this! i also would not give it to her again. it's pretty obvious that you can attribute it to the new med.oh yeah it's form that. I am just in a dilemma of not giving it time. I am wondering if we shouldn't give her a few days. My husband says yes give her a lttle time...............I always panic..........but...............I hate this part!Diane- You are in my heart. what alot to have to deal with. from being on the provigil I would say these symptoms sound serious and the rebound too much to handle. don't know how you do it! It is too bad since it worked so good. we also need to do something similar here as he does well on the mood stableizer but it is not enough for school. I wish you well and what happened to the vyvanse???
you know, I gave it to her again today. I am going to give it today and tomorrow. Now again she is fine today, some tics, but little (not like last night) and that compulsive nervousness is not there. Let's see how she does tonight. He did say the Provigil builds in your system, but not for a long time like Strattera or antidepressants. I'll see if she adjusts after a few days.
We didnt discuss the Vycanse as I am not totally unhappy with the Strattera. I think if the Provigil is a bust we'll go back to just Strattera nad just keep "holding her up" with tons of support. It just really isnt fair. Bad enough she has to take meds, then the ones that work make her all "worked up", the ones that dont arent enough to help her.................we'll get there................thank god she is a nice kid.
Well be bagged it. She hated it. So after we give it a few days to get out fo her system, we'll go back to our regular Strattera dose..................some day I'll learn to leave well enough alone and just be happy when we dont have side effects . Diane V39525.5656828704Now she gets home and loves it. This kid is going to make ME need medication
