Beginning med issue? | ADHD Information

My sons ped put him on that and it was miserable. He started him fof on 10 mg daily and it was horrible. He had all of the same reactions as well. he was 5 when he started taking it. After a week or two he was switched. I think he's gonna need a diff med now though. I'm not sure what to think of what he's going through.

My 3.5 year old is trying Adderall XR at 5g/day. He is emotionally unstable and irritable so far. Has anyone had similiar reactions and then seen a positive from the drug? We are trying it and have a dr appt Wed. to possibly change meds. I don't know if this is a reaction to THIS drug or just the body being shocked by medicine this powerful in general. Adderall XR was a mess for us. We did the slow increase up to 10 mgs, but he was always having such a bad rebound that we switched before the end of the three week trial.  A child can have a rebound effect from too little or too high a dosage. It just wasn't worth it to us, so we switched to Focalin XR and never had a rebound problem. Our doc says that stims come from different families and degree of refinement, so not all kids react the same to a med. Finding the right med at the right dosage can be a difficult process and can cause parents to question their decisions. I hope you can find what your son needs without much more agony to you all. Good luck! BPQW39522.5496527778

My son was 6 when we tried adderall xr. He couldn't handle it. He was irritable, angry, get in your face at school, aggitated, - all my adjectives that I can think of.

The pediatrician witnessed it and took him off it immediately.

I would call his prescribing doctor and tell him/her.

We started concerta a few weeks later (we let him stop for a bit) and he has been on concerta for almost 4 years, every day more successful than the previous day.

Call the doctor ASAP!!!

Bethann-Those words describe exactly what we are seeing. What dosage did you start him on with the concerta?

I have a call into the doctor...but I can't wait for the meds to wear off today!!

We started himo off at the beggining of it, I believe 18mg, but in a day he needed the next dose. He moved quickly up an leveled off at 72mg within 3-4 months. He stayed there for 3 years and then was increased lat summer, where he is currently at 90mgs. He will be 11 in June.

He also takes 1mg of tenex, which really helps with a lot of his HHHHH stuff. Check that out as well.

I really believe his concerta would NOT be as successful withOUT tenex/guanfacine!!

What is/are tenex/guanfacine? I am still new to all of this...

There is actually a thread on it on these boards. So many parents now have their children on it.

It cost me w/ my insurance.

It controls my son's impulsive behavior, and relaxes him. Google it AND look for the thread.

Since you feel our boys are alike, I wanted to tell you that we see a psychopharmacologist, a psyciatrist who prescribes meds. He is awesome!! My son is only 10, and doesn't tell him his problems, but this doctor is ahead of us. He is brilliant with the meds out there, so many of them to choose from, and he can talk if and when he chooses to!!

Have to keep in mind all the meds work differently for every child for us Ritalin works best.
