Hi guys, my older daugher is gifted along with ADD and it was really difficult getting her help because the doctors in this area seem to not know anything about being "twice exceptional". We also have received very little in the way of tools for compensating for ADD so I've learned most of what I know by my own research. Luckily we have meds for my dd but I don't want to see this same doctor for my second daughter. Second dd is more highly functioning than my oldest so I think that a diagnosis would be really tough to secure.
Now my younger daughter wants to be evaluated for the second time for ADD because she feels she is missing the details of spoken information more than she can handle. She missed some important directions on the SCAT test recently and she missed out on a free gift yesterday because she doesn't hear. The last doc we brought her to said she was marginal for ADD but because she had good grades, she couldn't possibly have true ADD. That's when I knew that her would not be useful to us. He also had no clue how to make her life easier. Money down the drain.
Anyone have a recommendation for a really good doctor in my area?

If this doctor was truly well versed on ADHD he would know that ADHD is not an academic problem. ADHD is not a learning problem but rather a problem with learning due to inattention and lack of focus. Those with ADHD dont have a problem processing the information as one does with a learning disability. They miss a lot of the informatuion due to a lack of focus but despite the lack of focus, many get good grades, even those that are not twice exceptional because they are able to learn like a non ADHD'r. As they get older, with untreated ADHD grades do slip because the work becomes more abstract and detailed. There is no such thing as marginal ADHD because in order to be diagnosable the behavior and problems must interfere and impact on quality of life. Life in general has to be a struggle. If the problems were maginal then that wouldnt send a parent off to a doctors office looking to have their child evaluated.
I dont know of any good doctors in Albany New York but if your anywhere near a childrens hospital I would call and inquire about getting an appointment to have your daughter assessed as they usally have a team of clinicians that do psychological and neurological assessements. Good luck :)
I just today recieved a recommendation from the principal of gifted education in our area. I haven't called yet but I'm really excited that his bio said that one of his specialties was gifted education.
Most of the psych's in our area are pretty dumb about twice-exceptional children so I'm not going to just pick someone out of the phone book!
Dr. Anthony Malone is great. He is a dev ped. Latham I think!peacefulmom,
Have you been to him? I just found him online. He seems highly respected.
Hello yes I did see him for some insight for my DS w. PDD-NOS but he also helps w. ADHD etc. I found him wonderful and he is highly respected in my area which is over an hour away. He also contracts with Early Intervention so if he is not covered by your insurance while in EI he will take payment from EI. I loved that about him! He takes our insurance now and we saw him 1 year after the first visit and he was very gentle with us as parents but right on with our son! Let us know and GOOD LUCK!
Do you think that he would do the educational evaluation as well or am I better off seeing a psychologist for that first? The school will not help with this because my dd's grades are good. Do you feel that this doctor helped with tools to compensate for the ADHD or was the focus on medication. Again, I could see both a psychologist and an MD to cover all options. Thanks.
hummmm.. I would call the office. I was not exploring any ADHD issues at the time I saw him so I am not sure. The office staff is friendly and they can answer your questions I hope!
