Vinyl Backs and IEP | ADHD Information

Hi all,

My son's school requires those see through vinyl backpacks. He already ruined one this year and his new one is ripped. I know its because hes careless with them. He rushes and jams his books in them, gets caught on things. Etc. If this one totally rips out we are not going to by a new one this year.To teach him responisblity plus they are too pricey for the quality -. We only get a few months out of them.

There are those mesh back packs which are roughly the same price but they are name brands like jansport so I think they may last longer. My question is since clear back packs are a school district wide policy is it worth opening my mouth about this at his next meeting. Will the school even be allowed to let him use those mesh back packs. Again its one of those things that now hes in 3rd grade and its not too bad, but in 4,5 and 6th grades I can see us going through 4 or more vinyl back backs a year or having a lot of lost work because he has to carry everything.

Oh and one more thing. He rides the bus to and from school.

It is probqbly worth a shot, but since it is district policy you won't get much of a response. Be glad he is allowed a backpack, ours have binders, which we replae 5-6 times a year @ a pop.

Thanks thats kinda what I though too.

You have to wonder if the people that came up with the policy have kids.  I just don't seem that they would hold up that well to the abuse of any kid.   We go through many binders and accordion type folders every year and my kids aren't overly hard on their stuff.   I'm sure we'd be replacing this style of back packs a couple of times a year.

I did a quick google search to see what they looked like.  I found one site that sells them wholesale for .25 a piece for larger ones.  Maybe you could get together with a group other school families and order a case together.  This would cut down the cost dramatically.

Good luck.
you may get it in the IEP. It depends. My daughters school doesnt allow wheeled backpacks, but we got hers in her IEP. She has low muscle tone and I got the support of the physical therapist to allow it, but they did allow it. Another thought is getting an extra set of books for home. The less he is jamming in the backpack, the less to damage. Our school system requires the clear backpacks but do allow the mesh ones. As long as they can see in them. They are lighter, and they do last longer.
