Question for those with younger kids | ADHD Information

we are going to start working with him with m&m's and tic tacs to see if it helps. it would be great for all of my kids to learn how to swallow, but i know myself, i didn't learn till i was in jr high. i just never had someone to work with me and show me. my son takes foacalin xr...you can open this pill and sprinkle.   He now swallows it along with a glass of milk...he is 6If you have a specialty pharmacy in your area, they might be able to make the medication into a suspension liquid.  The liquid would probably still have an off taste to it but you never know.  We have a 3 and a half year old who has to take medication on a daily basis for his testotoxicosis.  He couldn't swallow the larger of the pills, and we tried grinding it up and hiding it in foods (anything from applesauce to pudding to 3 Musketeers bars) and he just did NOT want to have anything to do with it.  We did find a pharmacy that could take his med and put it into a suspension liquid and it helped TREMENDOUSLY.  We always gave him a  treat afterward to help take any bad taste out of his mouth (usually a Hershey's Kiss or something.)  The only thing that could be an issue is if your insurance won't cover the suspension... ours decided to stop covering ours because they deemed it "experimental."  Grr.  Luckily the few months reprieve we had gave my son time to "outgrow" his pill-swallowing aversion, and now he swallows all his meds like a champ.  i talked to a pharmacy and they said they can actually crush generic form of ritalin and turn it into a suspension and heavily flavor it. So i guess that is an option, but i'm just not sure of the whole ritalin thing. My nephew was on it for years and years and at 14 he tried to commit suicide.

would you mind to keep me posted on how he does on it? I would really like to consider it. But my dr just doesn't know enough about it to prescribe it.

For us it was easy my husband showed our daughter how to swallow pills and she was able to do it no problems she would rather do that than drink liquid meds or chew tabs.   My son had trouble swollowing his pill as well. I did the sprinkling on yogurt. Then he got sick of yogurt. Then, I did sprinkling it on ice cream...gave him brain freeze. I tought him how to swallow pills using plain M&M's. tic tacs will work too. Once he got the hang of it, he gave me no problem swallowing his pill in the morning. Just make sure you have something really good for him to drink!

ok thanks . :) there is a new treatment daylantra or something like that. its a patch. i asked about it, but the dr didn't want to give it to him because he hasn't heard anything about it. and said he wasn't comfortable giving him something without knowing anything about it.

he's on 10mg in the am and 10mg at lunch of the metadate cd for a while and he said we'll see how it goes.

but first we have to make sure the insurance will let us. cause they will only allow 1 a day. so we have to try to get approval for it, cause the 20 & 10 is too much but just 20 once a day he metabolises it to fast.

We just started the daytrana patch. Our son is entirely against taking medicine, so this 'pirate patch' is great for us. brtsqd3-I will let you know how the daytrana patch goes. So far we have had some great moments, but also lots of side effects as he adjusts. I am going to give it a couple of weeks before we decide what to do. It is so hard during the trial time, but I guess this is true of all medications...

that are taking meds. 4, 5, 6 or so. Do you have problems getting them to take it?

Heres my thing. The last few weeks we have had a really hard time in the mornings getting him to take his medicine. We have to break the capsule open and sprinkle it in pudding or applesauce cause he can't swallow pills. I don't know if its the taste or because of what happened a couple of weeks ago, but we struggle every morning to get him to take it.

I'm taking him to my family doctor to be treated for his adhd until I can get him into a psychiatrist. They have a waiting list here. My nephew has been on it for 2 months. She said they will call me when they have an opening. Where my family doctor is located they have their own pharmacy and they take straterra and mix it in with a cream somehow and its rubbed into the forearm. Its absorbed that way. I have thought about asking to try that with him, but i've heard so many different things about it affecting kidneys, liver etc. Plus I know what it did to my oldest son and how it made him very emotional and angry.

I just don't know what else to do. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Well my son is 5 and he is on Concerta.  We dont have the option of opening the capsule as it is time release.  I just put the pill in a spoonful of pudding.(applesauce would work too)  I cover the pill well and kind of push it down into the pudding.  When I put it in his mouth he swallows it right down - can't even tell it is there.

I would imagine that it tastes bad if you are having to open the capsule -  most meds taste awful - even the kiddie flavored ones.

Good luck finding something that works for you!  I know what the fights can be like - neither one of my kids would take liquid meds without being held down on the floor because of the taste.  I was soooo glad when they got big enough for pill form cold meds and antibiotics!
