issues with my son | ADHD Information

My 8 yr old has always been sneaky with things but its gotten to the point that I just don't know what to do anymore.  I am always finding candy wrappers in his bed.  I found trash that he tried to burn from a candle in the bathroom.  One of the things that really just get me is him peeing places he shouldn't.  Example he peed in a water gun, in a cup on the porch, and lastly he did it in the shower in a cup and left it on the counter.  This morning I wake up and see BM on the door, floor, and light switch.  He claims that he didn't know he did that.  UGH!!!!!!  I don't know what to do.

My 9 yr. old does/ has done all of this too.  Let me know if you figure out the candy thing- it seems no matter what I do he still finds it and sneaks it.  Our next step will be to just not have any sweets in the house (again)- not a battle I'm looking forward to.

As for the bathroom stuff, my ped said when my son wipes poop on the walls it is because he's constipated, and I would have to agree, although she couldn't really explain why, just that some kids (esopecially those with adhd) tend to do that.  She had me giving him laxatives every time it happened, but then we ran into some problems there.  They build up a tolerance after a while and can become dependant upon it, although they are sometimes nessecary to "get things moving" initially.  I eventually figured it out on my own.  The ped's nutrition advise wasn't aggressive enough (limit dairy, cereal with fiber).  I've eleminated almost all dairy and push the fruits and veggies (what he'll eat of them anyway) and that has really cut down on the incidents.

He also knows there are consequences- he owes me serious cleaning time for bathroom offenses.  At his age he is perfectly capable of not just cleaning up his mess, but also cleaning the rest of the bathroom daily for the next week or so.  We also have lots of talks about germs and how they spread.  I don't know if this was connected or just coincidence, but the last time it happened he was violently ill two days later.  I told him it was because of the germs in his poop- it seemed to sink in, but we'll see.

The candy thing is a way to self medicate.  Glucose helps run the brain.

Hello- my son also uses a whole roll of toilet paper in a sitting. I now use a box of kleenex (the cheapest kind and the long box) and keep it on the back of the toilet. He only uses one or two at most. I didn't say a thing to him- just took away the toilet paper and put the kleenex there. It's fine- even for adults.

My son is 8 1/2. ADHD kids don't mean to be slobby- they just can not organize. We can help with this by limiting the number of clothes he has or even taking all his clothes out of his room and letting him pick out the ones for the day and for sleeping. Also- I have had to take all his toys and now I have a toy store. What that is is just the toys in a few plastic containers in my room and he gets to pick out what he wants to play with (one toy or set). When he wants another he has to bring back the first.

With the food- I got a plastic chain and put it around the doors of the refrigerator and locked it at night. I also let him pick out one or two snacks and left them on the counter each night with the proviso that he eat them at the table or at the counter. It took a while but it works. I think we are training ourselves!!

You may want to see a psychiatrist and psychologist for a serious behavior plan.  I would also address these issues with your son and show him the proof.  I hope things get better for you.  You may have to employ serious consequences.

my son just turned 9 and although he doesn't do that poop thing. he is constantly sneaking things in his room. i find chips, candy you name it in his bed, under his bed. i swear my kid is a SLOB. And he didn't learn it from me. OMG I would never live the way he does. It drives me bonkers. I don't understand why he is like this.

But when he does poop, I swear he uses an entire roll of toilet paper. So much that he can't even flush the toilet.

We have caught him numerous times, because he has his own bathroom, standing at the door and trying to pee into the toilet from the door, which is a good 3-4 feet away.

It drives me absolutely insane some of the things he does.
