ADHD & Insurance Advice | ADHD Information

We are coming off a group policy and I have to apply for private insurance.  My insurance agent sent in a question to BCBS about my 5 y/o DS who has ADHD.  They came back with an underwriters opinion that they will NOT insure my son.  Has anyone had problems like this?  What are my options?

I did call the myself and the customer service person said that I can submit his medical records with the application and have the underwriters go over it.  But he said that they could still deny coverage.  I asked if that happens what can I do?  He said that I can get a Certificate of Insuranility from my previous insurer (which our group is with BCBS) but that is not a guarantee.

I just don't understand why insurance companies won't insure kids with ADHD.  Its not like they are going to have to pay a ,000. medical bill each month.
I don't know anything about insurance matters like you're describing, but I want to share my sympathy and support for what you're going through.  Insurance companies treat people so terribly sometimes, and unfortunately you're now one of the victims of this.  Maybe they're saying he has a pre-existing condition, and they don't treat pre-existing conditions under the new policy?  I hope you figure out a way to get the insurance coverage.  If not, maybe the ADHD would qualify for SSI benefits?

We are just getting started down the evaluation process with ADHD and never even thought about insurance.  I will definitely be checking into this!!  Thanks!

Ricklefm:  It is only individual insurance that you have to worry about.  If you already have insurance or you are on a group policy you should be fine.

I am coming off of group and going on individual that is the problem.  They don't deny coverage on group policies but they can deny you on individual.

Thats why if you are able to get onto a group policy do it.
