I too have been trying to get my 8 yr old to ride a bike! So far, the advise I've ben given is...
a. they need to see a reason and a purpose to ride
b. going on family rides helps (where everyone has their own bike)
c. take off the training wheels off the smallest bike you can find (2 wheeler) and let them try that first
d. train them in the grass of a large field, not on hard surfaces
I particulary like c and d. I don't have a bike myself so "b" is out of the question for me. Thanks for sharing these ideas. My son recently shared he was afraid and he won't ride his bike with training wheels. He doesn't want to be seen on the bike with training wheels. He is 6. We still have his smaller bike. I think we will try it before moving to his larger bike.
I have freaky kids who both werer riding bikes at 3ish, LOTS of ER visits evolved from riding at such a young age.
My advice is, lossen/raise those training wheels as high as they go, he will actually be riding on 2 wheels, without knowing it.

I thought about this too. If the other suggestions don't work for us I will try this one. Thanks for sharing.
MY SON WAS SCARED ALSO, UNTIL THIS YEAR HE IS 9.5 GOOD LUCKMy son just turned 7 and he can't ride a bike(w/o training wheels) either. He wants to but he gets scared after he falls off so he won't try agin. I have been trying to get him to ride evey year since he was 4 with no luck yet.
His favorite cousin is 13 and been riding/racing dirt bikes since he was 6 and my son loves to watch him and is amazed by it. He has been begging me for a dirt bike for a couple of years and I keep telling him he can't ride a dirt bike till he learns how to ride his bicycle w/o training wheels.
HisMom30139537.3165625neither of my kids can ride a bike. I wish they would too. My oldest (13) has multiple reasons why and probably never will, but my youngest (6)(no ADHD) is just scared and not really all that motivated to, maybe because her sister doesnt. Let me know if you find a way to get them to do it, I really want her to learn, both my husband and I ride bikes. Diane V39537.4484606481I too have been trying to get my 8 yr old to ride a bike! My kids rode bikes at four our street is on a slight hill so I made sure they could put both feet flat on the ground while sitting on the saddle and they learned to balance coming down the hill after a couple of weeks they just started pedalling on their own I think it was too much to grasp the balance and pedalling at the same time. My now 9 year old also has dyspraxia and I was told she would probably never ride a bike so I think this made me more determined to make sure she did.We spent about a week or so on the grass learning to balance after training wheels. My DS is hyper and very motor driven. Only fear he had was learning his balance.
Try the grass and soft surfaces if they have already been on the bike with training wheels.
My 9 almost 10 year old is also scared to ride a bike. My older sonWell i have a 19 year old with no special needs who feel off his bike w training wheels at age 6 and NEVER would get back on one. Know when he learned to ride? Age 16 when he decided he wanted to study at some point of his life, either HS or College in China or Japan and they all ride bikes there. He taught himself in 1 day. He is now in China studying his sophmore year at college and even told us when he comes home this summer he will not be driving, but riding his bike!! LOL.>i use to worry so much that he didnt ride but really it was no big deal. His life was not any worse for not riding. He still had plenty of friends...and he learned when it suited his needs.
As for my 10 year old ADHD son, we bought him a bike when he was 5 and he just wasnt interested. He had a scooter two years ago and sort of lost interest in that too. he has asked for a new scooter so we will get that this summer. but as for a bike, he has no interest and that is fine with me. No law says they have to ride a bike...!
My son is SCARED to death to ride a bike. Is this "normal" with ADHD?
