My son, age 6, has been on Concerta for a month. The first week we tried an 18 mg dosage but it didn't help, so his dosage was increased to 27 mg. He did very well on that for about three weeks. Now in the last few days he is seeming to be back to his pre-med self... with some differences... he is more argumentive, he is emotional again, he isn't staying on task at school (isn't doing what he is asked to do, focusing on things way outside of what they are doing in class, etc.), getting angry and argumentive with his teacher... at home he's been more emotional again, is running around bouncing off the walls (almost literally), making noises again and acting like a crazy goofball.
Sooo I guess my question is about why he was doing so well and then all of a sudden within the span of less than a week the meds seem to not be working anymore. Is this normal or might there be something else going on? Do you think the doctor might increase his dosage again? I'm worried about my son being overmedicated. I know Concerta is based on metabolism rather than weight but it still makes me nervous to think of my 6 year old on 36 mg or higher dosage of a stimulant. Obviously I'm a newbie about all of this, so any advice or input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help and time.
