Some kids develope coping stratagies to deal with thier ADHD and may not need them in all settings. You and your daughter can always discuss a trial med break with the doc.
My kids' doc has the kids start school without meds each year to see if their needs have changed. My oldest is inattentive and she knows that the meds help her get the teachers' instructions and get through her work, so her input is an important part of her treatment. She is "scattered" and will probalbly need meds for driving as well as school as she gets older.
One of the kids we know is trying the 8th grade without meds to make the decision about high school. This way the high school grades are not affected by the trial and the family can really confirm the need for the meds.
My son stopped meds in 4th grade and his grades have taken a hit. However, we had major side effects and it took him quite a while to compensate for the meds academically. He is now about a B- student on a good day.
I think if your daughter chooses to try without meds that is great, but you and she should realize that it takes a while to learn to compensate and the grades may take a hit.
Good luck.
Thank you. She is in 7th grade this year. Maybe an 8th grade drug-free trial might be something to think about. Will have to discuss it with her dr.
