Vyvase--Insomnia & ODD | ADHD Information

Share

We are having the same issue with our son who is 9.  He doesn't wake up at night, but he doesn't fall asleep until 10:30/11:00 (normal bedtime is 8:00!) and when he wakes up in the a.m, he is so defiant, mouthy, cries easily, just miserable.  He is the same way from 4:00 p.m. until I put him to bed.  He was on Concerta and I never saw this angry side of him so I know it is the vyvanse, but the Concerta was making his tics worse so I had to switch.  I put a call into the dr. today so I'll see what he says.

Good luck

Just found this site and I'm looking forward to reading ALL of the great info here! Helps to know there's a place I can come to share things w/other people in the same situation!

My 8 year old DD has been on several ADHD meds (Adderral, Daytrana, Strattera). She has been on Vyvase for about 4 weeks now. Tremendous improvement in school, couldn't ask for more!!  BUT home life has been HORRIBLE! She talks back, argues, major ODD issues. I've been trying to deal with this the best I can but one major problem is insomia. She has a hard time falling asleep and can't stay asleep. I tried Benadryl and Melatonin. Neither worked. Dr. prescribed Ambien which didn't work either. Started giving her Strattera about 6 pm, but that doesn't help either. About 3 weeks ago her dr. gave her Trazodone, which is an anti-depressant but has heavy sedating effects. For the first few days it worked great, now it doesn't. It helps her get to sleep but not stay asleep. So every night we have issues with her waking up and having problems going back to sleep. She's very defiant when this happens. Screams, yells and carrys on. I've tried every approach I can think to (and read about). I get mad, of course things get worse. I'm nice, she's so mean and it doesn't help. I tried explaining to her that she can turn her lamp on and read a book, which she does but only after I've had to get up and talk to her. Once she does this she falls back asleep but usually wakes up again at 5 am. I'm worn out!! Of course this disturbed sleep is wearing me out and making me have less patience. We're going back to the dr. this week but I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions. I don't really want to take her off the Vyvase because it's great for her at school. BUT not at home by any means. Any suggestions????
