I am new here - trying to figure out what to do. Last year my son's first grade teacher told me she thought he had adhd (because her son had it). I spoke to my sons doctor and his response was he didnt think so. He asked me how he did in school - and now after reading, I think this is where he came up with his answer. My son does great in school - he is even in the Gifted and Talented program there. As a mom, after learning about this and seeing the signs - I see so much that could pertain to him. But the doctor wont go farther in really diagnosing him. The worst part about this is that he does things without thinking...like he does things that are wrong, and then says he does not know why. I am at a loss. I dont know what to do. How do you know?
Why would you want to diagnose him if he is doing well in school?
What are the other issues that concern you?
debbienj is his impulsiveness getting him in trouble at home and/or at school? Why did the school even bring it to your attention?First, welcome to this helpful and supportive place.
You might go to a psychiatrist or neuropsych or even an educational psychologist for diagnosis. It can be hard to sort out ADHD symptoms from attributes of gifted children. You might also go to hoagiesgifted and look at twice exceptional (gifted + learning disabled-incl ADHD) and get more info. http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/twice_exceptional.htm
