Questions about trying Vyvanase? | ADHD Information

WE ALSO TRIED FOCALINXR FOR OUR DS,9, AND HE DID HORRIBLE ON IT. NOW WE ARE ON VYVANSE AND ALTHOUGH IT TAKES A WHILE 2-3 WEEKS TO GET THROUGH ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS, EATING SLEEPING SUCH, BUT WE LIKE IT SO FAR, 4 MONTHS IN. HE ALSO TAKES ZOLOFT FOR ANXIETY, WHICH WORKS WONDERS, I TAKE LEXAPRO AND LOVE IT.

Well I can tell you that VyVanse was the miracle we needed to keep my boy in school. He does absolutely FANTASTIC at school while the meds are in his system but the problem I am having is he does not seem to be able to function well through the rebound sometimes. He has been on this medication since the middle of November and I thought we were doing good as far as handeling the rebound BUT here lately there have been a couple times per week that he almost has a meldown(for lack of a better work) if someone strikes him the wrong way. He is VERY overly emotional during the rebound and if someone speaks to him wrong or if his feelings get hurt then OMG. It happened the other night and I tried to talk him through it and I asked him how he was feeling and he grabbed his head and said " I just feel like my head is gonna explode" (not from a headache, that is what my dad thought I meant)

So that is where we are at this point. Hope this info helps.

New here. Background is I have a 7 yo DS that was diagnosed with ADD combined type but mainly inattentive and a learning disorder which is mild. We have tried Focalin XR which made him so angry but did help his focus. Tried Strattera for just a few days before getting into the ped psych who wanted to do Ritalin instead.

DS is 49 pounds and is only on Ritalin 7.5mg Twice a day. We are trying to titrate to 10mg twice a day but the psych also diagnosed him with anxiety due to school issues and started lexapro. Doc wanted to wait to increase ritalin until we saw if the lexapro helped some issues.  And the 10mg we did try for a day or so gave him stomache aches and he did not eat the entire day.

The lexapro has really helped his spirit and personality. We also changed schools which made a huge difference. He was in a private school that wanted kids to be 6-9 months "advanced". Due to the LD it was killing him and the teachers were not very nice about the whole thing. Gave him so many punishments--without telling me. Poor kid never complained.

Anyhoo, the ritalin doesn't seem to be helping his focus. I have been reading some really good things about vyvanse and wondered if that would work. Is it worth trying if the regular ritalin didn't help? Because isn't vyvanse similiar?

Thanks for any input. Pulling my hair out here!

Vyvanse is a stimulant like Ritalin but they are in different classes of medications.

AS an FYI it is quite common for stimulants to increase anxiety. I am curious as to why the doc didnt want to give the Strattera a chance? My daughter has ADHD, LD and all stims increase her anxiety. She is doing fairly well on Strattera.

The psych doctor wanted to try Ritalin because he thought that might help us with the diagnosis of ADD.  It took us a long time to get the pschologist testing done and we were going crazy with school.

The doc is out on medical leave for a few weeks and I am suppose to contact him on Thursday if he is back to find out what to do with the meds.

thanks for your thoughts.
