Daytrana patch--location | ADHD Information

My son had this problem for a while and then it totally went away so I hope
it does for you too. I used neosporin on the red spot and that helped. Or
maybe topical benydryl would work too? I remember some posts about this
last August or Sept. so there may be ideas there too.Our son has been using the Daytrana patch for about 4 mos now and we're starting to experience some mild skin irritation on the hip area.  We do the recommended alternating of the hip and moving it around to avoid putting it in the same spot each time.  It's mostly dry skin and we try to lotion in the evenings after cleaning the area.  The problem we have is that today, the spot that his patch was on became very itchy and he scratched until the patch came off and now it's red & irritated, says the school nurse.  My question is, have others found success in putting the patch in other areas?  Back, higher than the hip, etc...  I'm just thinking that for a while, it will give the skin on his hips a break to heal and soften up again.  Any suggestions would be great!

My DS has been on Daytrana for a year and a half now.  DS got to the point that he was bloody and his skin was literally one welt upon another.  We would be called to school several times in a week as he had scratched his patch off.  With help from other parents we found that the Nasonex/Flonase (a steroid) reduced the swelling.  We tried other areas for the patch but the hip area was always the better area as it was absorbed better.  We have found the following to be of great help:

1.)  Remove the patch with baby oil gel

2.)  Wash the patch area with soap and water.  Better yet, have him take a bath.  We use Boudreaux's Butt Bath (yes this really is the name).

3.)  We spray Nasonex or Flonase onto the area where the patch was and on the other hip too and let dry

4.)  Once the area is dry, we apply a generous amount of skin ointment (again we use a product from Boudreaux called Baby Butt Smooth).  We also put a tiny bit on the opposite hip as well.

Hope this helps!

We have had great success with the Flonase prior to patch application.  Spray a small amount on the area in which you are going to place the patch and let dry for several minute.  Then, just apply the patch the same way you normally do.  We have not had the problems with skin irritation since we began doing this.
