Identification Help | ADHD Information

Share
I posted a couple of months ago regarding my 6 yr old son.   We have since taken him to testing (a PHD who specializes in gifted kids with disablities).  The history is that in the past teachers have flagged my so for both giftedness and adhd.  Long story short he came up being highly gifted.  At the time the Dr. didn't see any of the the trademarks of ADD/ADHD.  She said that usually they show up on giving the IQ tests (e.g. WISC III WIAT II) as inconsitencies.  The Dr. said since he aced the test (and her observations) she didn't feel like we need to pursue the adhd any further.  However, all that being said the kid at time just gets over excited... especially in groups.   He is very stubborn and that adds to the problems (I ask him to stop.. he doesn't listen - you get the point).    He has been behaving in school and getting "stickers" on his K daily report card.  I am sure it is because we have bribed him with the promise of a special camp this summer.

Anyway, I guess I'm typing all this trying to determine how your kids were identified?  Was it through IQ testing, observations  like we had above or was there another mean?   My concern is the tester/DR only saw him one on one; not in a group and that is where our problems occur.   I would like to think this tester knows her stuff, but I can't reconcile the issues we are continuing to have.

Thanks for any input you can provide once again!

my son didnt have an iq test or anything. his teacher observed and did a conners rating on him, and i did one at home. then the social worker at the school rated them, and gave me a copy. my son was a 8 out 10 for hyperactivity and a 7 out of 10 for inattentive.

so without a doubt we knew he was adhd. we knew when he was 2 yrs old, but i didn't think i was fair to him at that age to medicate him. i wanted to wait untill he started school to see if he would outgrow any of it. i don't understand though.

he did great in pre-k with no meds but it was only 3 hours a day, but he handled himself great. but when he got to kindergarten after the concussion he was out of control. couldn't contain himself whatsoever. so i don't know. the neurologist doesn't think any of it has to do with his concussion so who knows.

i forgot to add my son is jimmy neutron when it comes to some things. you could pick out anything and tell him to take it apart and put it back together and he could. but when it comes to certain things in school he's really struggling.

my husband always says he will either rule the world or destroy it.

Inconsistancies show up in testing when the child has a learning disability, not ADHD. ADHD is not a learning problem but rather a problem with learning due to lack of focus. The two are very different and most children with Adhd are average to above average intelligence. Academics may suffer at some point due to inattention and lack of focus but the core problems with ADHD have nothing to do with academic difficulties unless the child has a co existing learning disability.

I suggest that you have your child tested by a neuro/psychologist to ascertain the reasons for your son's difficulties and in this case a second onion wouldn't hurt. Only a trained professional can give your an accurate assessment as many disorders and/or behaviors can mimic ADHD

Luvmykids0239551.8888425926my daughter was diagnosed by both. She has academic/IQ testing and that is where the question of ADHD first arose. We then did the Conners rating....etc., etc. She is mainly inattentive.
