My son was just diagnosed and put on Metadate CD 20mg-he was very emotional and his doctor is trying the 30 mg for seven days-today was the first day and he had numerous break downs in kindergarten and hit another child.
has anyone else had issues with their child being over-emotional on this drug?
any suggestions on what to try?
Chell I'm very surprised your doctor started a 6 year old on 20 mg and then 30. That's a really high start eve after my son was on 20 Concerta the doctor told us we need to start back down at 10 on the Ritalin LA. For quite some time last year my son was only on 10 mg and did fine it was only the rash that made us change. Maybe you should ask for a lower starting dose. I always like to keep my son on the lowest one possible and put up with a bit of hyperness instead of doing a high dose. A child who is in kindergarten is still so small. My son is 8 and in 2nd grade so he's probably quite a bit bigger than your son. I know some say they don't go by weight but by symptoms. I have to say my son's symptoms are quite strong. My 5 year old tried a low dose of Metadate CD, I want to say it was 10 mg. His behavior on it was so worrisome that I nearly took him to the hospital. We only did it 1 day. I know you are supposed to give it time, but I was worried about his safety. He was inconsolable, irrational, and difficult.
Remember though, each child is different, so each med will affect each child differently.
Good luck!
Hi, I was looking here because I'm thinking of changing my son to Meadate CD. Is this your son's first medication. Because if so all of the meds can do things like this at first. It takes time for the kids to adjust. My son started with Daytrana Patch and due to a rash we quit. Then we tried Concerta but now he can't sleep because it's a 12-14 hour med. So his doctor was just about to switch him to Ritalin LA. Then I read it can't be taken with food and he will not get up a half hour to 45 minute early to take a pill. We are just too rushed in the morning so I'm on here researching other meds. Give your son time unless it's so difficult for him. I always start new meds on the weekends so I can be there and see how he is doing.
Thank you for your input-This was my son's first medication and I asked the doctor to switch him because of the emotional issues. He is now on Adderrol (sp?) and it is no better-I think I jumped the gun a bit. Thanks for your input-he is on 10mg of Adderol and we are going to give it a bit and see how it goes-this is really tough!!!! I'm glad I found this site-its nice to hear what other parents have to say insted of just doc's.
