My son is having bad reaction to his meds | ADHD Information

Thank all of you guys for such wonderful words of upliftment. Jd is stabilized for now he is just so very active since being off his meds since yesterday. I will have to re train myself to get use to him without his meds. So far so good in the sense that he has not had and hugh tantrums or meltdowns yet. Just a couple of minor ones that I was able to talk him down from. The doc here say that they will watch him for a week and we will go from there. They are hoping that he improves during the week without his meds. If not then we have a major problem. I pray that all will go well. And I have to remind my self that thank god I am so in control of my sons health care that he see the dr. About twice a month not including his play therapist and skills training he does twice a week. The physch really stuck his foot in his mouth because he told me yesterday that on jd's meds that you have to have an ekg yearly it has been over 2 years since his last one. I felt so guilty I should have know this. I appreciate all of yalls support.

Hey lethy proud mom- so glad for the update on jd and you too!! BTW- you shouldn't feel guilty for not having the ekg's. That is up to the docs to make sure that their patients have the tests necessary before prescribing these controlled meds and sometimes lethal combinations. They are the ones with the training. Get plenty of rest for the both of you.

My child is on Dexedrine and Clonodine? What questions do I need to ask our psych. and what symptoms do I watch out for? This is scary!!!

My thoughts and prayers are with both of you and your families. Hopefully both of those boys are in a place where they will be stabilized, cared for and begin to heal with proper treatment without the side effects.

It seems like the clonodine/stim combo is not safe. Does anybody know if this applies to tenex/stim combo? My dd was just about to start tenex in addition to her stim. I am scared now.

Strat affects the liver more than the heart. There is anew study out about Clonidine and Stims, together they evidently can cause heart damage. I will try to find the link.

I agree with randyjim, call your Dr or Psych before changing meds.

edbson39556.8754976852oh lethy proud mom, I dont have any advice just want to say everyone will be praying for you guys. This is so unfair. It's bad enough our children cant function normally, then we find them help and even that causes grief . Please keep us updated, your poor little guy. [QUOTE=edbson]

What meds was he taking?

You will eventually find the right combination....good luck and I hope he is better soon.

He was taking focalin xr, risperdal, clonidine. However he has been on ritalin, concerta, adderral, strattera, carbamazepine, to name a few. The drs are not sure which ones did the most damage they just know that is was the meds. They are leaning towards the strattera but he has not been on that med since march 2006. So we will wait and see.

lethy proud mom::::::::: the doctors at the hospital Jon is in told me that the clonidine with a stimulant is what can damage the heart because the stimulant makes the heart beat faster and the clonidine lowers the blood pressure which is a terrible combination. That is why they are checking Jon's heart, also... they told me this today. hope this helps a little.

oh i'm so sorry. i wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully once he is well, they can find the right meds for him.

My oldest nephew who is now 18 was on ritalin from the time he was walking till he was 13, and he was a school and tried to jump from a 2nd story window. He was also institutionalized. He also had hydrocephalus (sp). Come to find out though, after all of that ime, finally my sister moved her and the kids from Illinois to New York and he went to a dr and was told that he was not adhd and should have never been on ritaln. It was something else but I don't remember what she called it.

Anyway, sorry to rambe, hugs to your son and your family.

To everyone: my husband said that I need to post and tell y'all NOT to change your children's meds. If any of you are anxious about the combinations, please contact your doctors and let them know about your concerns. Thanks

My son jd is 8, he is bipolar, odd, aspergers and adhd. After a very rough few years where he says his brain was attacking him making him do mean thing. He even attempted to kill himself in school. He had to be watched 24 7. He would make off the wall comments such as if he threw him self down the stairs would he die. He would say that he hoped he would die that nobody would miss him and that my life would be so much easier without him. That is so not true. I love my little man in training more than life itself. Finally after being institutionalized after the suicide attempt at school he was correctly dx and given meds that actually worked. We were so happy, until today 2 years later. My jd has had a huge set back today. We are in the childrens hospital where we are from. He had his normal monthly visit with his physch today when my jd told his dr. That his chest was hurting him very bad. He told him it felt like a screwdriver was being drilled into his chest. They did an ekg on the spot and it came back very abnormal. His phsych told us to go immediately to his pedi. His pedi checked him out and had him rushed to the childrens hospital an hour away. The dr states that the meds that they said he needed to take to keep him from taking his life are slowly killing him. Those are his words not mine. I am so sick with worry. I thought that all of our bad days where over. How can I give him meds that will kill him, but how can I let him go back to the child he was before his meds. He love life now, he didn't always feel this way. I am going crazy withworry. My mind won't relax.lethy proud mom39557.9411805556

I posted to you in the other thread....take deep breaths and tell yourself you will get through this for jd. Let them get his heart back to normal and then have them figure out different meds. He will be safe in the hospital. I wish you were near us in Fort Myers. I know our two 8 y/o's would have a lot to share.

Don't worry about his other meds right now. I believe the hospital can sedate him to keep him more relaxed and calm. You know everyone here will be praying for you both.
