My dd12 is really starting to have a lot of mood swings- I am mainly guessing it is puberty. She has taken Concerta since grade 3 with good results for ADHD-PI. Now that she is facing more social stress (middle school is a big change) and is going through a lot of emotional ups and downs I am wondering if it is time to try a different medication. I wonder if the stimulant meds could be making her more irritable. She has been struggling with organization and focus this year and I think we are looking at a change either way- either an increase or a new medication. I am leaning toward a new med.
I am worried that if we are talking about Straterra we have a long ramp-up period to deal with and by the time she hits her stride the school year will be over.
Maybe tenex until the end of the year? I don't know- any thoughts?
Yes, she started her period this year. My question is, with hormones raging- moodiness... do you think a stimulant could be aggitating/exsaserbating her moodiness. I have heard that stims are not good for anyone with a temper/aggression... and she is often acting gruff, grumpy, has a short fuse... probably because of hormones- so during this rough time maybe ditching the stims would make sense- not sure though- wondering if anyone else has been through this.I'm not sure how much you can do about the mood swings. My daughter is 13 and and obviously in the midst of all this too. She does seem more even keeled on the Strattera, BUT believe me we still see our days.............she is just overall more even on the Strattera without that up and down of using stimulants anyway. I, personally, wouldnt change meds twice, if you want to make the swicth to Strattera, I'd just do it. She can always stay on the Concerta (maybe a lower dose) for the first couple of weeks. We saw improvement form no meds within 2 weeks once we started ramping Strattera. t did get better the more into it we went, but some results in two weeks.I have a 14 yr old who has been on concerta for 6 yrs.[other stims before that] You are prbably seeing puberty raising it's ugly head. Has she started her periods yet? PMS is not unheard of in 12 yr olds. Hormones are a raging.I agre, my almost 11 yo is also having the horible symtpoms of puberty.
