Anybody got a kid anything like this? | ADHD Information

Hey Marble!

DD means "dear daughter."  There's of course, ds too, as well as dh (dear husband.)  I'm new to this board too, but I used to post often to another forum, and got familiar with the abbreviations! :)

My son is combo-type, but I understand about the hyper-focusing.  For him, it's doing any kind of creative art-type project.  He'll beg to use tape, scissors, paper, and then take some small toy and these art supplies, and create some really fascinating new thing.  We love the creativity, but hate how it's so hard to get him to clean up afterwards, and the fact that he refuses to do a lot of other things too. :(

If the 15mg adderall is the first you've tried, it may take a few more attempts to get the dosage right.  For our son, we started with 5mg, then went to 10.  10 is *ok* but not great, but the rebounds in the afternoons are awful.  On 15, he was much improved in behavior, but lost 3 pounds in one month, due to loss of appetite.   So doc put him back on 10 for a month or two and we'll see if his body adjusts.  i think we need a booster in the pm tho, because he's kinda making us crazy in the evenings!

Good luck with the adderall!  Let us know if you try any others!

oh yeah, and it sounds to me, from what I've read and observed anyway, like your son is not alone in his behaviors.  Very typical adhd-inattentive type.  We struggle with a lot of the same issues about getting ready in the mornings, ourselves, but I don't have a lot of great advice to give.  Sorry! I'm going to try the marble reward system to see if it helps at all.

yesterday, the only way I could get him out of the house on time to school, was with the bribe that we were going to our county fair in the evening, but he could only go if he was on time.  I've never seen him get ready so fast!!!

Only a physician trained in the field of diagnosing and treating childood disorders can give you definitive answers. I suggest you have your child tested to find out why he is having such struggles. The sooner you get more definitive answers, the faster you can get him the help he needs. Good luck :)

< =text/>_popupControl(); Several of your son's behaviors sound like my son, but some do not. My son also reads "in" his desk when the teacher is lecturing. Sometimes he draws. For the last two years we've had great teachers who realize that even though he looks distracted, he knows just what is going on and will probably score the best on exams, so they are very lenient with him. Just yesterday his teacher reminded me to check the "e-Bay box" (where he keeps confiscated items) for books and colored pencils before the end of the year!

Homework isn't a problem for the most part, but I'm sure that that's because we hit on the right dose of Focalin XR.

My son is also apathetic when it comes to sports, although he likes to do the timed run in phy ed. He says he likes baseball, but really he means he likes to bat. Swimming is fun, but only for recreation and not instruction.

I agree that you probably will want to have him tested for co-morbid conditions. That smart brain can sometimes help our kids fashion coping mechanisms that camouflage other things. Good luck!

Yes, he has been evaluated by a clinical pediatric psychologist  (M.D.) .  My son is on 15 mg adderall XR/day.  The meds have a very small effect.

I'm a new member.  Would you please explain what DD means? I gather daughter - but what's the other D?
I have a fifth grade boy with ADD but no HD.  He scores as gifted in English and Math - above 97th percentile in both areas.  He's on 15mg Adderall/day.

He loves to read, but to the exclusion of everything else.   His teachers tell me that he reads when he's supposed to be working or listening.  Frequently.

Hates sports.  He runs around a bit when playing, but he's nearly lethargic most of the time.

His school work is terrible in English and not much better in Math/Science.  He's almost completely unable to write more than a sentence, and needs constant  supervision, and direction in order to do so.  He is distracted by anything, and "zones out" all the time - daydreaming constantly.  His speech is slow and he sometimes forgets what he was going to say in mid-paragraph.

Mornings are bad because he constantly is sidetracked from getting dressed and getting his teeth brushed.   That's all he has to do in the morning, but a couple times each week it turns into me screaming at him to get it done - and feeling terrible after.

Homework sessions are terrible for the same reasons.

Grades are terrible - given that he's probably the smartest kid in the room.

It seems impossible for him to learn routines.  Every morning, he gets out of bed (after five minutes of jostling) and goes to the bathroom.  He never lifts the seat.  I remind him gently every day to lift the seat.   Never does it.

Every day, in English class, the kids are supposed to copy a few due dates and  things that the teacher has written on the board.  He won't do it about half the time.

He's a sweet, kid.  Not cruel or rowdy, doesn't argue.  He's not spiteful.

He has only two friends, and I worry that he's loosing one of them.  He's socially behind, and his speech is so slow that kids his age are bored/annoyed by him.

Anybody got a kid anything like this?  Rewards don't work.  Punishment doesn't work.  Developing routines doesn't either.

I sometimes wonder if this is ADD or something else.  I never hear about other kids that act like mine.

Has he had an evaluation? Sounds alot like my DD, with the exclusion of sports, which she LOVES. DD has ADHD /Innattentive
