Extremely accident prone - anyone else?? | ADHD Information

Just curious if anyone else has a child like my son (4 - ADHD combined
type, no meds yet).
He is EXTREMELY accident prone and gets hurt all the time. I tend to think
it's his ADHD because it seems he just doesn't pay attention to what he's
doing and gets hurt.
Anyone else experience this? Has anyone talked to your doc about it
before? Is it their ADHD or just clumsy-ness??

For example this was just yesterday:
-fell off bike and skinned a huge part of his shin
-tripped in the driveway and skinned both his knees pretty bad
-tripped into a fire ant pile and got bit all over his feet by fire ants
-ignored (or didn't process) my warning about his bouncy-ball on the
sidewalk and then fell and hurt his leg
-ran into the doorframe while eyes were on the tv while walking
-tried to climb up into his chair for dinner (we have a high pub-style
table) looked away and then fell all the way to the floor sideways and
smacked his back on the leg of the table.
-ran towards his treehouse while looking at squirrel in the yard and
tripped over the bottom step, splitting open his foot pretty bad

YES THAT WAS ALL YESTERDAY!
He's been this way for quite some time, always seems to just get hurt on
something because to me it seems he doesn't pay attention. Sometimes
we laugh because it seems so funny, but sometimes he scares me half to
death with various head injuries he's had over the last year.

Can anyone else relate???
Oh it's good to hear that someone can relate!

Lately he seems to hurt himself a bit more when he is tired, but yesterday
we had a nap and a good nights sleep (he LOVES to sleep and has always
been a straight-through the night sleeper) - but lately it seems like I can
tell that he's just not in the situation. His mind is somewhere else.

Today was a little better, maybe just one minor fall and bruise, and yes
Yme! I can relate to that fear of when other people look at my son
thinking that we might abuse him!!! But I guess some children are
accident-prone, ADHD or not

Now we have taken every precaution to keep him safe, we monitor him at
all times, he always wears helmet on his bike along with every single pad
imaginable, (but I can't put him in pants in a hot Texas summer because
he's a child that hates heat and usually sweats profusely ) - but it seems
like he always just finds a spot to hurt that isn't protected . It's very
strange because I am Not ADHD and when I was a child I was very very
cautious, have never broken any bones, and never any stitches.
To me it seems my son doesn't understand the danger in things, he has
NO FEAR of anything, and doesn't feel pain as much. I think that's why I'm
confused as a parent, left scratching my head thinking "why did you do
that??"

I am also doing some reading about the different Sensory Disorders, and I
think this might possibly fall along one of those - anything Hypo Sensitive
- he also stomps his feet, plays rough, hits things and himself a lot, etc.

But I guess we'll see if meds decrease this for my son or not once he gets
on them (waiting for doc appt.), it's just so hard as a Mom to see your
baby get hurt so much!!!
Just so you know, our kids can't think about what will occur as quickly as we can.  My son's dr. gave a great mind picture for me: due to the frontal lobe being less active in our kids, they act much like a tiger hunting prey.  They see the object, focus only on that object, until something else comes into view, and then the first object is completely forgotten.
Basically, our kids don't think before they act. They act before they think.  My son now as a bigger kid can verbalize what he couldn't as a toddler.  He told me about the time he ran through a glass window that he was pretending he was superman.  I mean, hello?!  You or I would know not to do that.  They have to learn by being injured repeatedly.
Meds help them to slow down their brains a bit.  It hasn't removed the clumsiness and injuries totally-it has only slowed down and or removed the major ones.
Regarding the heat and pants-I live where it gets to be 115+ for months at a time.  My son PREFERS to have pants on as he has SOME protection from the inevitable fall that he will deal with.
My son was a lot like yours... before meds, he had permanent black &
blue knees and shins. His preschool teacher was the first to notice that
his bruises were completely gone two weeks after starting meds. He used
to get distracted when he was climbing out of the car and fall out face-
first instead, at least twice a week. Somehow he had the ability to go
tearing off somewhere suddenly, but his feet wouldn't get the message
and he would just go over like a fallen tree. I tried to do it myself, and it is
impossible, yet he did it almost daily. His other specialty was walking
boldly into walls. Thank goodness he got his dad's flat little nose, or he
would have broken it several times by now. He got upset today that I
wouldn't let him ride his scooter in our condo parking lot (he is 7 1/2),
but I had caught him seven times today not looking when we walked out
into a parking lot or street crossing, I pointed it out each time, and I
wouldn't let him play in the parking lot until he learns to be safe all the
time. He doesn't see why it matters, because I was watching out each
time. this is going to be a loooong childhood!I can relate!  My son (4) is also very accident prone.  He has had numerous (way too many to count) bumps to the head and I do worry about whether that has affected him.  That does sounds like a rough day!  Was he overtired or getting sick?  The bumps & bruises seem to increase for us during those times.  It would be intersting to see if meds would decrease this.  I wonder the same thing. Prior to my child being on meds: broken collarbone due to jumping off of wall
staple to close head wound due to climbing up chest of drawers
deciding he would run through glass window: cuts to arms and hands
repeated falls, cuts, scrapes, bruises

After meds: repeated falls, cuts, scrapes, bruises

My son is now 13.  He is covered in scars.  Not only does he get hurt, he then decides to pick at them nonstop so that they look worse or last a lifetime when they would not have normally.

Can I relate?  Yes.  I thought at one point that I would be arrested when we had to go to the ER with those injuries one after the other.  In addition, he bites on his fingernails.  He literally has more skin than nail.  Also, he injures himself now, and doesn't remember doing it so that when I freak out and say: just what is this???  He has no idea A. that it is there and B. where it came from.

It won't end.  Remove all hazards you can.  Imagine "normal" kids getting majorly hurt.  Ours will outdo them every time.

Your child should start to cover up whenever possible.  I started to put pants on him even in the summer (I live in the Phoenix area-imagine the heat) and he must wear a helmet when on a bike or a skateboard, etc.

Now, I need to keep an ear out when he showers as he tends to slip and fall in the shower too.

Oy.

He is newly diagnosed ADHD, his teacher thinks it is more like sensory integration dysfunction. He is being evaluated tomorrow to check for sid. Good luck.lethy proud mom39566.5619097222My daughter Madie is 11 yearsd old, she has had difficulties her whole life with multiple injuries, illness' including ADHD. Madie was always sick, not feeling well and complained of some sort of ailment. I kid you not, that she has been coughing for 10 years, & never feels okay. I have always been worried about her always getting hurt, always being out of control and recieving such bad, negative attention for these problems. I have never had a friend or another mom to get together with, I am not sure if this is due to Madie's extreme behavior. I have struggled with Madie and all of her conditions for so long. Last year we decided that was enough, all of her hyperactivity and lack of self control was combining with a bad pre-teen attitude. She was a complete outcast in her school, she had been tormented, ridiculed & beat up by other children. She spiraled into such a depression, did not eat well and did not want to sleep at night. I was desperate for her. I have never recieved any support from her father regarding her care. He has always denied her any stability or devotion to her special needs. We (new hubby & I) finally seeked medication for Madie, despite our fears of bad side effects. She is now doing better due to the medication. The change in Madie has been amazing, we are now in peace, she is enjoyable to be with and I feel we have a new life. She does feel headaches, and stomaches while on the medication but I feel it is worth it. Madie is amazingly gifted in any thing artistic or creative, now she is able to focus attention to develop this.
