I'm not really sure, but if I were you and the doctor prescribed a certain dose and you aren't comfortable I would definitely talk to the doctor about it. Good luck, I know where you are coming from. My son was the same way until he was put on metadate cd.

Hi and welcome. I agree if you're not comfortable with what/what dose is prescribed you should discuss with the doctor. Probably not a good idea to start tring to guess at 10mg vs 15. You're splitting a 30 I assume so you're not going to be accuaret anyway. I would go with what is prescribed exactly. If you dont feel comfortable with what is prescribed, tell him/her. That said......you really need to give whatever you start some time. 2 day is probably not enough. If you CAN, 2 weeks is an ideal amount of time to see how the body adjusts to a med.

Good luck, the meds are tricky and 5 is a little young so it will take some patience. Hang in there, the beginning is the hardest. Once you do find the right at the med right dose, you'll know.

I have awonderful 5 yr old son who hasn't sat still since the day he was born..He never walks he runs, talks, busy body constantly..His pre-k teacher advised me to have him tested b/c he was so disruptive in class, talking, not following direction, etc..Had him tested and yes he is ADHD..Doctor put him on 15 mg of Vyanase and i split the capsule and diluted in water--but i was afraid to to give him even 15mg so I have given him 10 mg's the last 2 days ( jst started meds) he chatters even more!!  Just on that small dose--but its grown up chatter- you can have a conversation with him. His teacher said today he wast any better in scholl - still just as hyper as usual...So here is my question- should I increase the dosage to 15mg or change to something like concerta??  I am so new to this...but i hate that i have to medicate...Just wondering if I give him 15mg tomorow that it will make him more hyper!!  Any advice would so so be appreciated... Your son sounds like mine at 5, (he is now 13).  My son would literally do summer salts IN MY STOMACH when I was pregnant with him until I wanted to vomit.  He came out running, which is why he didn't walk until he was 15 months old: he kept falling on his face!
He ran me ragged.  I would have to leave food all over the room to get him to eat  because he refused to sit still.
I will say this: if you like and trust your dr. and have looked him or her up and only good stuff shows up: THEN TRUST YOUR DR.
If he or she has prescribed something, they have taken into account the child's health, weight, height and age, etc.
What you are asking here should be discussed with the prescriber/pharmacist.  "Dr., I am concerned with the dosage you have prescribed, is it safe?"
Also, if your child showed no improvement, and it is in fact ADHD, you may need to adjust the dose HIGHER.  ADHD brains have an opposite response to this type of medication than a non-ADHD brain (which would make him or her hyper).
This type of medication actually awakens the frontal lobe of the brain, thereby allowing focus and concentration to occur.  Our kids frontal lobes don't work as well as they should, so to speak.
OR, try a different medication. BUT one day or two is hardly a trial period!  Give it a chance, see how he does, then make adjustments with your dr.

(I am not familiar with Vyanase, but have looked it up online and it seems to be a stimulant med, which is a good thing with regards to ADHD.  However, there are several to choose from and each brain is different.  I have heard the best reviews from Concerta-which is what my son normally takes and will be going back on once our insurance changes.)

If your child is anything like mine: not having meds is like having a tornado come through your house.
Good luck.
Give the dose the doctor prescribed. You will never know if it will work until you try it. Good luck we have all been in your shoes

How do you split a capsule? That comment has me really confused.

I can relate because you are describing my son. He was walking before he turned 8 months and only walked for a week before he learned to run and climb. I have been chasing him ever since. My friends wonder how I do it? It does get better. When they hit puberty, they start internalizing some of the hyperness. They are still busy but it doesn't come across as fidgiting.

My son  is on vyvanse and has done 20mg, 30 mg and is now at 50 mg. The dose is based on symptom control, not on his weight or age. I think this med works well for my son. It is long lasting, rebound is not bad and it doesn't suppress his appetite like adderal XR did. He has continued to gain weight a normal rate for his age (12). We do still have some sleeping problems, but they are less than before.

You need to give him his meds as they are prescribed. You can not judge the meds effectiveness if you do not follow the instructions given. How did you know you were giving him 10 mgs?

If you are really worried about his reaction, start on the weekend. I always did that with my son. I could watch for side effects and judge how well they were or weren't working. The doctor will tell you it may take several days for your son to adjust to the meds.

The spider incident was scary. Vyvanse was not the right med for him. Each child is different and can react differently to meds. It may take several tries before you find the right med or meds for him.

Think of the meds like glasses. Can you live without a pair of glasses? Yes, but what quality of life do you have? The glasses don't make him any smarter or dumber, they just help him to survive. They bring things into focus. And just like glasses, they need to be monitored, evaluated and periodcally readjusted.

Get a referral to a specialist in ADHD, not a GP Pediatrician. It will be the best thing you can do for your son. Peds do not have the specialized knowledge to treat your child. A specialist will also be able to spot comorbities sooner. The Ped will see your son once every 3 months for 15-20 minutes. A specialist will take more time and on a monthly basis until you get things under control. A specialist will have more indepth knowledge of meds and their effects. There are some meds that a Ped will not prescribe. We just went to 2 month appointments, after 6 months of monthly appointments.

My daughter had a day when she was on Vyvanse that she had hallucinations.. it was very freaky.  I am glad that the Focalin is working.  I hope you find great success with it!

My child, age five, is on 30 mgs of Vyvanse. We just started it last week, changing from Dexedrine. So far, so good. He takes it early ,at 6 a.m., and it tends to wear off about 4 p.m. He is hyper, hyper, hyper. So, we are adding 5 mgs of Dexedrine's back in the afternoon to help him thorugh the evening. We have also found that with the Vyvanse, it doesn't affect his apetite as much. A good thing for him.

He is like your son. NEVER still, constantly talking, and VERY impulsive.

I agree with the others. If you are not comfortable with the dosage, please talk to your MD. Meds are ususally started at a low dosage and increased as needed.

Hello everyone - thanks for your your help...2 days into Vyvanase he was waking up saying he saw spiders in his room and was up at 3:30 WIDE awake!!  Never went back to sleep..The spider thing freakeed me out and for 2 days he talked non-stop..And when I say non stop I mean no pauses..it was exhausting for him and myself!  So I talked to the dr. and he switched him to Focalin XL 5 mg and today was his first pill.....OMG-he actually watched tv today, went swimming, and was pleasant to be around...A little agitated tonight but I will take it..I know this stuff takes time so I am going to stick it out with med for a week and see what happens!   My doctor is ok when it comes to my kids being sick when they have a cold but sometimes he is a little out there..I am looking to change my pediatrian now.Wish me luck! again thanks for your replies and i love this site it has been so helpful!instead of changing pediatricians it is probably best to get a pschyiatrist referral. Psychiatrists are better experienced in managing ADHD and meds.
