US Kids Overmedicated--Hoo Boy | ADHD Information

First of all, getting news from "Fox News" is like looking into the garbage to try to find a diamond: you will be very disappointed & only find trash.  Fox is the single biggest purveyor of lies and propoganda there is.  (And with as much media corruption that there currently is-that is saying A LOT!)   It is the propoganda arm of the corporatist White House AND corporations.  Corrupt and disgusting in every way!

Second, Americans are the least informed group of people in the industrialized world, in my opinion. (Mostly thanks to the aforementioned crack reporting but also due to the lack of interest in more than who was kicked off of American Idol last, etc.)

Third, idiots like Tom Cruise and his Scientology "group" trying to put out the "good word" that medicine is poison.

But mostly, unless one experiences this for him or herself: they have no idea. (Even in my personal experience, my son's own father/grandparents are in denial due to wanting to believe it is just him being "a boy.")

P.S. To the myth of "socialized medicine" being a bad thing and forcing a need to wait--have you actually been a citizen of GB, granny?  If not, I am hearing what garbage has been programmed into the brains of those who listen to Fox and other media like it.  The insurance industry is sure not going to go down without a fight!  (Good thing they have buddies at the newspapers, TV stations, internet, cable, and on and on and on....)
And the alternative to national health care for all is millions of people NOT being able to afford/seek medical care.  Is it worth it?

I don't have to be a citizen  of the country.  My best friend married a Brit and died while waiting to get into a doc.  My neice is married to a Brit and lives in london.   I won't even go into the nightmare she experienced just having a baby.  And, yes, I have been a frequent visitor to the country as well.

1]we are more industrialized than GB, 2] We don't have socialized medicine and can usually get our kids seen by a doctor without a prolonged wait. 3] Schools are becoming more aware of adhd[as are parents]   And, we have a heck of a lot more kids! lol!

More people in the US have braces and straighter teeth than those in Gb.  Ya don't see that making the news.

I whole heartedly agree with Yme - Fox is just trash - actually pretty
much all news media is. There just seems to be no concern for actual
truth - just whatever gets readers/viewers to go "ooh ahh" and increases
ratings. But don't feel so bad about the US - I'm pretty sure Aus and UK
are the same .
I used to be one of those people who saw the rise of autism/adhd and
allergies as a case of pharmaceutical companies convincing people that
they had problems to make money - and though I'm sure they do that
(every time I hear the awful things pharmaceutical companies get up to
around the world I'm absolutely shocked and sickened) I now know from
experience that these problems are very very real. My son and other
members of my family rely on medications to make their lives livable.
I often wonder why so many conditions seem to be on the rise, and it
seems to me that it might be the rapid rate of industrialisation. In a very
short time we have gone from an environment pretty much free of
synthetic/man made products to a world full of it. Re: paints in building,
clothes, toys, personal hygiene products, shampoos, aerosols, plastic
everything, petro-chemical products. My son sees an immunologist and
they keep us really aware of how pervasive chemicals are. I think it
wouldn't be too much of a surprise to know that the effects of all these
substances are having on us are showing up in the increase in various
illnesses and conditions, or a changing of the way our brains work - our
brains are after all little chemical factories themselves . I just read a
scientific article saying that scientists are only now coming to understand
how different substances from the environment mix and have a cocktail
effect in our bodies. That a 'safe level of this' plus a 'safe level of that' is
not safe at all.
As for advertising for prescription drugs - well I am very much against
that. Advertisements, by definition, try to make their products appealing
- prescription drugs shouldn't be made appealing they should just be
used where necessary at the advice of a doctor. In Aus such advertising is
illegal. But last year I heard talk that pharmaceutical companies wanted to
start up their own "family health" channel as a platform for marketing
drugs.
For whatever reason people see that themselves or their children are
suffering and I think the news media would be better off informing
people on how to help and be understanding than accusing parents for
helping their children, or adults from helping themselves. The news
should be free of sensationalism, I think it should be a place we can turn
to to hear what is happening in the world and to make the world a more
united and compassionate place.
Anyway, that's my 2 (and a bit) cents...

Here we go again....I avoided meds for *years* because of this kind of propaganda...and most adults do NOT understand, including teachers. Does everyone who doesn't have a special needs child really think it is just because we are bad parents that our dc have ADHD, bipoar, etc.????

Luvmykids0239574.8054976852Everyone has a unique medical story.  I still say excluding those who cannot afford medical care to "expedite" care for those who can- is wrong.
I live in Scotland and the problem is when they look at statisics they look at the number of kids medicated and not the number of parents who would like their kids medicated. I had to fight for years for a dx and my daughter was not dx until she was 12 with adhd then later with hf autism and I had to go private to get her dx with dyslexia. She was put on strattera which as you know has to be ramped up properly to see any benefits. She was given 18mg and I was told to increase it to 40mg after one week. Her psych said at her last visit on 17th Dec he would increase it when he saw her again in 8 weeks. The appointment she was sent out is for today. Some 8 weeks. The drug was not helping her as the dose was too low so about a month ago she refused to take it anymore. She is now 14. Also I believe she is bipolar but the psych will not medicate as he says this is an adult condition. In Scotland we cannot get our kids medicated which is probably why it looks as though a lot more US kids are. Medication is not taken lightly by any parent but if it can improve a childs chances of getting a better education and getting into less trouble then it surely is a good thing. Medications are more readily available in the US like melatonin which I believe you can buy in a pharmacy. I cannot get this med even from my own doctor it has to be prescribed by her psychiatrist.
