Gavin (9) has been behaving very badly in school. This week? We have recived two calls this week from his teacher stating that he is refuising to do assignments, crumbling up his work, throwing pencils. Generally acting obnoxious. The first episoide we discipilined him. I thought we had gotten through to him but 3 days later another call with the same complants. Home hes as much of an angel as an ADHD kid can be.
Let me give you some history: DX with ADHD, Asperger's and Disgraphia. Taking Stratteria 18mg. Hes 75lbs. 3rd grade Honor Roll student. In 1st grade he was suspended for 3 days for an outburst. We have a Chapter 15 in place due to the past behavior problems that appears is not being followed.
Now that you have the history, We can't figure out what to do with him. We normally make him write for his behavior, either a paper explainig what he did wrong or make him write I will not do... 100 times. We also ground him. First weekly offense just the remainder of the day. Following offenses for a week. No TV, computer or electronics. He has no friends so we cant take that away. He plays baseball but we feel that taking that away isn't helping him understand that he is commited to his team.
We have a meeting on Monday(5/12) with the school. I don't even know what to say to them. We're doing all we can at home. Any suggestions?
Oh and we are caliing the ped for an increase in Stratteria and making sure she's aware of the situation.
Thanks All
His Strattera dose if he weighs 75 lbs should be between 40-60. This alone should help.I agree, his dose is too low, and if he has been taking that dose for a while he would develop problems with it. Strat is notorious for causing behavior issues at a dose that is too low. I would speak to his Psych and have him ramped to target, whihc is between 40-60 mgs. This could be related to the disgraphia- I am no expert but I would rethink using writing as a punishment for someone with dispraphia. My son has a friend with ASP and disgraphia and he seems quite pained by writing assignments. He has done much better since starting keyboarding.
thanks
Close your eyes. You are in a 4th grade classroom. You have horrible handwriting. You hate writing. It is very hard. Why can't you do math instead?? Or fill in bubble tests? Read? You have to write a lot in class each day. Everyone is better and faster than you, and you notice. The class has to wait for you. How do you feel?
Having writing as a punishment is just so ironic. Ouch.
You should probably push for services. RSP in the classroom, or pull-out during writing assignments. Maybe someone can scribe part of it. Maybe he can learn to type. Brainstorm with the IEP team.
Definately, the Strat dose is way off.
I have some intresting updates about this issue, check out my other post. ANger and school
Thanks
