Viclar95:
My boy, first day of Vyvance (2 weeks ago) had constant throat clearing which I now believe to have been a tic, but it subsided quickly. First night, couldn't sleep but later found out that he had drank "Monster" energy drink that day and that's a no-no with this type of med. No more Monsters, also gave him small dose of Melatonin next few nights to make sure...slept well, but hard to get up in am.
Recently stopped the Melatonin (and continued to prohibit energy drinks) and all side effects seem to have gone away.
Now that you mention it - his breathing at times was deeper than usual...kind of like the breathing when getting ready for sleep...more of a relaxed type.
My boy is a little irritable at about 430pm (7am 30mg dose)- either when the med is wearing off or just fun pre-teenager is coming out. We can handle it so far. Getting positive verbal commentary from the school --will need to wait and see about measurable academic improvements.
Please keep posting your experience. I was a nervous wreck the first days too, but am still glad we are trying this.
Thanks everyone. This makes me feel much better and he's done better today too. This morning he started off a little anxious acting and he was doing that twitching thing with is mouth but that seems to have stopped or slowed down considerably from yesterday. He did have problems getting to sleep last night though, hopefully that will get better quickly as well. I gave him the medicine at 7 a.m. this morning and tomorrow it will be even earlier since we will be back to the work and school routine so that should help.
I really appreciate everyones insight. I feel much better. Thank you
P.S. Happy Mothers Day to all.
Also, mine is on zoloft for anxiety and Melatonin (all natural) for sleep still but he sleeps sooo much better with the Melatonin.I can only tell my experiences with vyvanse..but that still won't mean it pertains to your child because every person reacts to every medication differently. I totally agree with Diane's advise.... just continue to be watchful.
Vyvanse works like a charm for some, but it didn't for us. Both my son and I were on vyvanse for almost 3 months.
The vyvanse made my cheeks feel numb and it made me "too focused." It was like I'd hyperfocus on the first task of the day and by afternoon, I was still involved in that first task and hadn't been able to pull myself away to transition into anything else... I kept thinking it would eventually level off, but it never did.
..it didn't have that affect on ds, but he did have a tic that didn't go away until we stopped the vyvanse...he was also VERY irritable and emotional on the vyvanse.
This is just fyi.... I wish you the best!
Hello,
My child developed a tic while on Dexedrine. He wade a snorting sound, like he was trying to suck up mucous. It was so very annoying. It stopped after a few months. Give it a couple more days and see if the symptoms go away.
My son started on Vyvanse today and I need to know if anyone has seen this or if I am being too paranoid.
First, can you get a tic the first day you are on the medicine? He keep twitching his mouth a little and swallowing and I asked him about it and he said he was doing this before taking the medicine but I also asked if his mouth was dry and he said yes. He also seems to be breathing a little heavy. In the past couple of days he has been doing some coughing and a little congested. Could I just be mistaking that for something wrong with the medicine? I don't remember hearing different breathing before today but maybe I'm just more in tune now that he's started this medicine. He told his dad that his fingers were tingling earlier but he says they don't now.
Am I just a little freaked out right now? What should I really watch out for? He keeps saying he feel fine and he really calm right now, I can tell a difference in his ADHD symptoms. He seems pretty focused and not over the top. He says he feels fine and he doesn't feel like he is having problems breathing and he says he feels good. I'm just worried. He has been on ADHD meds before (Adderall XR) and we took him off that mainly because when he came off the medicine he was a BEAR! :) and worried about his weight / growth.
I need advise please, if anyone has any. Thanks :)
they could be tics, both the swallowing, twitching and hard breathing, BUT they also could be a congested child and over anxious Mom
. I'd give it a few days. If they are tics from the med they'll stop when the med is stopped, or shortly there after. If he feels ok, try to hang in there. Start a journal, document concerns and time of day..................it'll help at the end of two weeks and you're looking back to see if there are things that are really worrisome and still nagging at you.
Good luck, I HATE the beginning days of a new med.......................
It is great that you are watchful like this. The advice diane gave is awesome. I don't think I could have said it better. Good luckmy son ticked on vyvanse mildly for a couple of weeks. i was freaked out completly. he also had some other side effects as well. it had been about before about 2-3 months, the side effects were gone. now he is doing good inschool and better at home and now I have to debate the middle school situation. ohh boy
good luck with your situation but minor ticks can go away in time.
