Vyvanse Dosage question | ADHD Information

Share
We have been on Vyvanse for months now and we like it very much. my son, 9 takes it in the morning and it wears off in the evening. My pediatrician started my son on Vyvanse 20 mg daily.  He didn't say whether it was better to start it in the morning or in the evening each night.  What do you do?

(I have a call into my pediatrician's office, but he is on vacation until Wednesday, and I'm very curious).
Vyvanse is a stimulant med and would be taken in the morning.

The instructions I received when my son started was to give it to him around 7:00 am. That is to make sure it wears off early enough in the evening so that he can sleep. We still have sleep problems but they are reduced compared to the problems with the Adderall XR. He eats better on vyvanse than he did on Adderal XR. I don't see a big rebound problem, either, probably because he is eating better.

My son has been on it for 9 months, and I think it is working well for him.

If you don't mind me asking.  What mg is your son taking for vyvanse?  My daughter was taking 50mg but after about 5 weeks she started to not complete any of the school work.  She started 70mg this past Friday.  She had a great day at school.  All school work was completed in school plus she participated in class discussion which is not usual.

I am wondering if it is to soon to tell if this high dosage will do her some physical harm.

msanab4---The dosage is based on symptom control, not weight or size. (Non-stimulates like Straterra arebased on age and weight.) If you are worried about damage, have the pediatrician do a liver function test. It is a simple blood test and it can tell how well the liver is functioning.

Minty fresh---Glad to hear that it is going well for your son. We actually started on 20 mg as part of dosing study last year. I knew that was not enough that first week. We did 30 mg for 3 months before going up to 50 mg. My son is 12 and into puberty, which I think warranted the boost.  I give my son his meds and let him go back to sleep. He wakes up about 30 minutes later and the mornings go much smoother.

Minty fresh, welcome to this forum. It sounds like your Ped did not give you much information about this med and your son's condition. It isn't all doom amd gloom, in fact, I consider my son's and my ADHDness it is a blessing. He will be extremely creative and willing to take chances when other won't. It is our job as parents to help them learn how to make the better decisions, which can be more exciting with an ADHD child. Please take the time to read as much as you can and become an educated advocate for your son. My PCP told me to become an expert on any condition I had to protect myself, because doctors can't know everything.

Thanks everyone for the advice!  We indeed started it in the morning (actually around 7:00 AM also), and it has already made an immediate difference in his school behavior.  His teacher updated me every day via email how great he was listening in class, not fidgiting, and not talking out of turn all day long and needing redirection!

He started at 30 mg, and I think that's where the doctor wanted to keep us (He's 7-1/2 and very slim).  He actually wanted to start him out on the 20 mg, but they aren't manufactured just yet (next month or so they are coming out with 20 mg, 40 mg, and 60 mg dosing).
