Trent is severely adhd and he has alot of OCD. He's only on metadate cd for adhd, but his OCD seems to be really getting bad, he totally couldn't get started this morning at school because he was so obsessed with something else.
Do any of you have a child that is both adhd and ocd? Do they take one med or two for these? Because the metadate cd just isn't doing anything for his OCD. So I don't know if I need to discuss this with his doctor or what. His teacher told me it was really bad this morning.
OCD is an anxiety disorder and when stimulant meds are given for ADHD, anxiety can be a side effect of the stimulant med's which exacerbates the symptoms of OCD. Stimulant med's only manage the symptoms of ADHD. When the child also has OCD, other medications may be used to treat the OCD symptoms but the child must be monitored carefully by a physician experienced in med management for these types of disorders.
Definitely speak with your child's doctor and please keep us posted.
so the meds could be causing his ocd? or making it worse?
Right now he's only seeing a reg family doctor till I can get him in with a psychologist. He's on a waiting list. So should I wait? Or should I still talk to the family doctor about it?
Have you ever considered a pediatric psychiatrist? They are the best at managing complicated meds, something a psychologist can't do. My son is just like yours. Our doctor has asked if we want to add a med for the OCD, but I'm not quite ready yet. I already feel a lot of guilt over giving him a stimulant, he is barely 6 years old.[QUOTE=brtsqd3]so the meds could be causing his ocd? or making it worse?

No, the meds dont cause OCD. Stimulant medication can made the anxiety worse when the person has OCD. Please don't wait. Speak tp your family doc and get a referral to a specialist.
Ok thank you. Well the probably is there are no actual child psychiatrists/psychologists around here. So he's on a waiting list through the state for a psychologist/psychiatrist whatever they are called. There are some 2 hours from here, but they aren't accepting new patients or don't accept our ins. So unfortunately for now, I don't have much choice on who sees him. Our family doctor has been very wonderful with him and his meds. Much better then the peds he has seen for them in the past 7 months. He actually wants to do tests and check all of his vitals and actually talk to him etc. Instead of just having us come in sign a pick up sheet and give us his script and we would do that every 4 months then they would see him on the 4th month. And didn't want to run any tests but would listen to his heart and check his blood pressure.
