I need HELP! | ADHD Information

Hello everyone,

We switched our son, age 6, to Vyvanse from dexedrine. His MD thought that once a day dosing would be helpful to us, and we agreed. Since starting the Vyvanse,at 30mg, he has been screaming out in his sleep; scaring the crap out of all of us. Not to mention the lack of sleep for his brothers. He aso has become more agressive; slamming doors, biting, talking back. He has no impuse control. He ran out into the parking lot at Wal-Mart without a second though. When the Vyvanse wears off, he is horrible. He's like Dash from the Incredibles. Here, there, and yonder. He also has ODD, and it is definitely coming out more. He's gotten in trouble a couple of times at school this week.  I phoned the psychiatrist yesterday and asked the nurse if we could go back to the Dexedrine. She said the MD wants to up the Vyvanse to 50 mgs a day and see if this helps. My husband has to take him in Mon. for weight and vital sign check. The psych also discontinued Risperdal about a week before we started the Vyvanse. I am at the end of my parenting rope. My husband is at work today, and I am home with four little people by myself. He takes Clonodine for sleep and I was so desperate that I gave him one this morning to see if it would calm him down. I don't want to piss off the psych and just change him back to the Dexedrine and Risperdal this weekend, without her approval, but I'm ready to call 911.  Please, Please help.

Thanks guys for letting me vent.

Today has been a better day. The psych. discontinued the Risperdal because he was taking four meds, and she wanted to get him down to just two. He was taking Periactin to help him eat, and with the Risperdal that was all he wanted to do. Not a bad thing since he only weighs 45 pounds. So we dc/d the Periactin.  He is very easily irritated, and the the irritation seemed to be getting worse. She thought that maybe he had outgrown the Dexedrine, and since he has just turned 6, she would change him to another med.  Now, he will not listen to us and is just downright defiant and no impulse control. He jumped off the top bunk bed and bumped him head on his bed. Maybe we will survive. Right now it's just constant chaos.

I know that all of this is trial and error. I'm hoping that we will get everything better very soon. If anyone lives in Alabama, can you swing by and pick him up?? I need a break.

It sounds like it honestly isn't the right med for him. I am wondering if he was stable why did they mess with his meds. Once a day dosing is nice, but not always necessary. Risperdal helps with the mood changes and I know that it is not technically a mood stabilizer, however it does help control mood swings. When we first put our son on risperdal it worked wonders. I am trying to figure out why they switched his meds. Because with our children, if it isnt broke why try to fix it. I would tell the doctors to switch him back if there are no reasons for his rx. change.
