Beware of this type of Doctor! | ADHD Information

I have had the worst experience with a doctor that I have ever had in 36 years.  When I suspected that I had ADHD I did a search on the internet for psychiatrist in my area that specialize in this condition. I live 40 miles from work so I figured I would find someone closer to my work place so that I could go during lunch. I found this one doctor that "supposedly" specializes. Well, that was pretty much what his website was all about. I made an appointment and was able to get in pretty quickly. I was being my usual impatient self and did not want to wait the one month that it would take to get into other doctors. That should have been my first clue. When the doctor finally saw me, I was up front about the fact that I am hearing impaired and that I wear hearing aids. The main reason I supplied this information is that I think it makes the ADD worse and he was speaking so quietly. His first series of questions were... get ready for this.... How did you find my practice? Internet. What search engine did you use? Google. What key words did you put in? Probably Adult ADHD and city. During the conversation I mentioned having anxiety. He asked me if I typed in anxiety into Google as well? I stated that I didn't know. He replied "Well I am just trying to cover all my bases". I should have walked out then. He finally asked me a few more questions and then stated that I do have ADD with not so much "H". During all of the questioning he still refused to speak louder....with my hearing aids I can hear almost perfectly, but I still could not hear him. When I would ask him to repeat something he had said he looked irritated. When he went to take my blood pressure he stated that sometimes it is a little high when patients come to him because they are scared. He stated to me "What is the worst I can do? The worst I can do is admit them to the psychiatric hospital against their will". I don't think that he liked that I did not find this amusing. Anyway long story short... he gave me a prescription of Vyvanse. I seemed to work great at first but then was wearing off too soon. I stupidly kept my second appointment and wrote down what side effects that I was having and concerns about the drug ahead of time. I handed it to him and he never even looked at it. He decided Vyvanse was not working and that I should take dexidrine. My pharmacy does not even carry dexidrine! He was very short with me in the 10 minutes I was there. I was disgusted with myself when I walked out! The point of this entire long winded story is to beware of these type of doctors. I am a fraud investigator and I should have seen it from the beginning, but I was too impatient. I wanted help and I wanted it now. As with everything, some people are going into the ADD/ADHD specialty because it means big money. These individuals know that they can prescibe a drug which requires you to come back every thirty days, unlike an anti-depressant. Everytime I walk in that door he bills my insurance 0's. He has no idea whether I have this condtion or not and frankly does not care. So in the end I will keep taking the vyvanse (it does help) and I have made an appointment with a clinical psycolgist with a month long wait list in my home area. Supposedly, according to a recommendation, they do extensive testing and have an in- house psychiatrst if needed. Please, if you are just researching the possibilty that you may have ADD/ ADHD or for that matter any other kind of psychiatric condition, BE PATIENT and go to a caring, good doctor with a wait list.
