IEP meeting on Tuesday NEED HELP PLEASE!! | ADHD Information

Share

Extended time for homework and classwork is a typical, normal, everyday accommodation for ADHD.  There's no excuse for the school not giving these.  Not turning in work can be solved quite simply--all homework goes in one folder, and your son must produce this folder for the teacher, who will remove the homework from it and put the homework in it.  That will take thirty seconds of her/his time.  S/he can handle it.  If your son will potentially lose the folder, then it needs to be in a zipped binder that he carries everywhere with him.  One zipped binder for all my son's work has been a true life saver!

What on earth is he doing for fifteen minutes in ESE?  That's not much time to do anything.

This is a lot of information, but you may want to start reading it because it's the best information about IEP's that you will find on the web:

Thanks lillian, that I didnt put in, ALL my daughters stuff is oin her zipped binder, even her agenda book.  Oh, it's NEVER make it to or form without that.

I thought of another life saver, we also have a second set of books at home...really helps.

Jessica is right about the private school thing, most need an attorney and VERY expensive hearing. HOWEVER, if this the best option for your child it is very worth it. This is more applicable for kids who just cannot function at the public school. Either significant beahvioral isues (I mean severe), or severe anxiety (wont even go to school) or multiple LD's and they are not learning (like my dd). Then you're placing them in a setting specializing in these concerns, not just the school of your choice, you need valid reasons why it's a better placement.

I NEED SOME ADVICE FOR OUR UPCOMING IEP MEETING!!!!!

My son is a 6th grader and to say it nicely Middle School has been a horror story.  From medication nightmares to IEP violations I am preparing for a battle on Tuesday.  His grades have dropped all year and I was assured it was due to transitioning to middle school.  I am going through his IEP and I read that he only receives 15 minutes of ESE time every week.  Also he has special accommodations that are not being met.  He has preferential seating and his teacher places him in the back.  This same teacher also gives him lunch detentions for not paying attention, moving his legs and tapping his pencil.

His grades are mostly D's.  Most of his 0's are homework and classwork.  He usually does his homework and never turns it in.  It drives me nuts.  I need some sort of safety net for him.  Be it extended time or finishing work at home.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.  I was told I could fight to get a private school voucher due to the abuse of his IEP accommodations.   Thank you........Colleen

I would bring any/all documentation you have. Write down everything that is not being followed in his IEP. Then also have a clear concise list of additonal accomdations you'd like to discuss with the TEAM. Extended homework time and time to finish schoolwork at home should NOT be unreasonable requests. Try to work some kind of communication plan between home and school for cross checking homework. I bought my daughter individual folders. One for homework to come home, another one for homework completed, like that. That way she'd have one place for to be done work and another for finished (of course she still misplaces the work, BUT it works most times). We had issues also in 6th grade about the fidgeting and tapping, drove me nuts too, they were always calling me.

I'm not sure what you mean by a private school vouchure for abuse of IEP accomodations. If you mean them paying private school tuition, that's not really true. Two things on that, being in private school doesnt mean better education, especially for kids with IEP's. Secondly to get a district to pay for out of district placement is VERY difficult and lack of effective progress must be proven. I know this as we just got our district to place our daughter out of district, it wasnt easy, it took a year, a lot of money, and we got off easy. It is also not always the most apporpiate placement. For us, the new program is the right placement for her, but it certainly wouldn't be for most.

I'd drop the private school idea ... you need to file for a hearing ... hire an attorney ... and beat them in court. They don't hand this over on a silver platter.

Jessica N39709.7389930556Thank you for all your advice.  I am  putting a list together of concerns and additional accommodations I think he will need.  If you can think of anything else please send me a response

IEP concerns

1st 15 minutes of ESE?  When is this being done and what is being accomplished?

2.  Where is he working on his specific goals and who is overseeing his progress?

3.  What are his testing scores for this year (FCAT if available)

4.  Has he achieved his IEP goals and is he progressing on grade level (he started 6th grade on grade level)

additional accommodations:

1. extended time for classwork and homework
2. No lunch detentions for ADHD behaviors (fidgeting, moving legs or hands tapping pencils, putting head down and covering ears to attempt to limit distrations.
3.  Should be nonverbally redirected when doing these things not punished. Pointing out problem and threatening a consequence only results in him concentrating on not doing the action.  He does not learn what is going on in class

He currently receives preferential seating (not being followed), extended test times, simplify directions
clarify directions, provide additional directions, check for understanding, use of graphic organizers.

His goals are for language for example "Student will use comprehension skills and strategies (prediction, clarifying summarizing questioning) to increase understanding of reading with 80% accuracy  (this one is being done)

He has vocab goals that I know he is not making.  He struggles and is failing in this area.

If you need a 2nd IEP meeting to get the IEP the way your child needs it, then request it.
