Auditory Hallucinations | ADHD Information

Well, I got her into the doctor today and they are lowering her dose of Concerta from 54mg to 36mg to see if that helps.  We have a follow up in a week and if she hasn't stopped hearing the voices they may try switching meds.  They are pretty worried about it.  She still has 2 weeks of school left so I hope this doesn't mess her up too bad.  I just hope this works!

They can't get her into a Psychiatrist until July.  Our base doesn't have a full-time one so we have to wait until he comes here.

I'm just so worried, and tired, since she has been hearing these voices she is having problems going to sleep.

The doctor just called.  They want her off all meds for the next 4 days!  She has school tomorrow, 2 baseball games tomorrow night and a game Saturday morning and her birthday party!!  I don't know how we're going to get through all of this!!oh boy, hang in there, you'll get through it.

My ADHD DD is 9 yo and has been on meds for 4 years.  She has been very stable on Concerta for the last 3 and has been on the same dose for the last year.  Just recently she has begun complaining of "hearing voices".  At first she told me they were just screaming her name but as I got her to talk about it more she ellaborated that they keep telling her she is all alone and everyone she loves is going to die.  She is very scared.

I don't know if all of this is stemmed from the fact that we just moved to Japan, far away from all family and friends or that her favorite uncle just died back in October in a car crash and she is having a hard time dealing with it.  Or if there is something a lot more serious going on.

I have a cousin that is schizophrenic (sp?) and bi-polar runs in my side of the family.  That is always a concern since I know that majority of the time ADHD is often accompanied by other disorders.  We have been so lucky so far since the only thing that she really has is adjustment anxiety.  She is a very gifted child and tests off the scales so long as her meds are stable but I have always had the fear of something more serious coming about.  Is it common for other problems to just "pop up" so far down the road?  Has anyone else ever had a child with Auditory Hallucinations?

Ok.  So I called base medical and they are going to try and get her in to see a doc but so far all they have is 9 June.  I'm very concerned for her.  Any suggestions on what I can do for her until then?

So I just talked to medical and they are getting her in tomorrow.  They seem to be pretty worried about it as well.  I'm so worried!!  I'll update on what they say.

I don't have any advice, but wanted to wish you good luck.  It is so scarey when we don't understand what is happening with our children.

Thanks!!

I'm sure everything will be fine it is just very scary right now.  We'll just pray for the best!

Well we went and saw the doc today.  We were off the meds for 5 days (except Saturday, my husband gave into her) and it has been a real trial.  She is still hearing the voices though.  Unfortunately there is only one Child Therapist and he is all the way up in Yokuska (we are stationed in Japan) and he won't be coming to our base until July.  They may be flying us up to see him though.  They think there is a good chance she is either Schizophrenic (sp?) or Bi-Polar, both of which run in my family.

I feel so helpless at this point.  ADHD I can handle.  I've done all the research and reading and have helped her through it for 9 years.  This is a whole new territory.  I hate not being able to help her.

She's so upset about it.  She feels she is doing something wrong and believes it is all her fault.  The voices are scaring her so much that she just cries, now she is hearing them during the day too.  I just wish there was something I could do for her!!

Cheesehead,

My daughter went through visual hallucinations at one point.  She thought bugs were everywhere and everyone was out to get her.  For her it was the medicine, which was a simple fix.  I hope it works out for you.  Thank you!!   It helps to know that someone else is going through the same thing.

My son is going through the same thing.....  He hears people.  He is very detailed about the people.  The people have tools and take the hinges off of the doors at night while we sleep.  I took him to see his pschy and he said that at the higher doses of meds for the ADHD hearing voices is a side effect.  However, he is on Risperdol for bipolar and that should help with hearing the voices.  He didn't seem to concerned and recommended that we try a new pshcyhologist for therapy.  We have an appointment for later in June with a new pschologist.  But until then I have to deal with "the people"  I'll let  you know if we get any where with hearing the voices!

Thanks Diane!!

We got through Day 1 alright.  I'm a little upset with the school though.  Instead of trying to help her get through the day with no meds they pulled her out of class and sent her to the Guidance Counseler.  FOR THE ENTIRE DAY!!  She wasn't even in class for 20 minutes.

The thing is she's not being too bad today.  I've seen her worse.  She has really controlled herself well.

Her baseball games went alright.  Her team won both games BUT we had to pull her out after 2 innings of the first game because she was playing in the dirt and she's the catcher, so that is pretty dangerous.  She did make 2 runs though!!

The second game went a little better.  She was able to stay in for 3 innings and made 2 more runs.

I'm really hoping tomorrow goes ok.  The first day with no meds is usually not too bad.  It's the second day so I'm a little worried.  She has another game and her birthday party.  So, I'm really hoping it goes ok.

She's good kid and I feel so bad for her.

3 MORE DAYS TO GO!!

Why don't you look up some information on Juvenile Bipolar Disorder.. My son was diagnosed ADHD and ODD, but now they're thinking there might be something else going on as well due to some other symptoms that began popping up, and they're thinking Bipolar. It might be something worth looking into.

Mandia,

Thank you so much!  I will definately look into that.

We just had a dr appt and they think it's possible she has bipolar as well as ADHD, fun to medicate.  I just hope they are wrong.
