Strattera question | ADHD Information

Definitely noticed a difference in my 15 year old son's personality after he got to his target of 80mg on Strattera.  He became very irritable, unpredictable, and combative. He had taken Concerta for years before Strattera.  He did well on Concerta but had gotten a tic (eye blinking) from it so we switched to Strattera.  His grades tanked on the Strattera and so I decided it was not doing what I had intended and stopped it.  When I originally spoke to his doctor about his aggression and irritablility, his doctor felt his moods were due to adolescence.  I should have listened to my motherly instinct back then and stopped it sooner.  He is much easier to get along with now and he said that he feels a lot happier. My only advice for you is to trust your gut.  If you don't think something is right, change it. You know your child best.

Good Luck!

It takes time to build up, I would give it a couple of weeks. His target could be as high as 65 mgs, for his weight.

My ds who is 10 started on Strattera last week.  Dr. put him on 10 mgs for a week, then it goes up to 18mg for a week, then 25 mgs, then 36mg and then to the 40 mgs the dr. thinks will be the appropriate dose for him.

Last week my son was happy and smiling, I have not seen that in a long time.  He was keeping himself under control.  Not perfectly but the week was soo much better.  Then yesterday we started the 18 mgs and he is cross and easy to get angry.  Not like he was before we started the Strattera.  Has anyone every experienced this?  Is it normal or should I be concerned.

I don't have any answers for you.  Dig around on the other Strattera threads and you might find something there.  We tried the med unsuccesfully.  I do know that it is a strange med in that if the dose is too low or high there can be major issues with it.  I hope you find your answer.Strat takes 6-8 weeks to actually start working, and until he is at target you will see issues like this. Just hang in there, it will get better. What is his weight Btw?

He is approximately 70 lbs.  I know the dr. said that we had to build up to his correct dosage (or as you said target.)  Even though he has been a little wilder the last two days as opposed to last week, with this Strattera its not anything like when he was on vyvanse.  He was mean and nasty all the time on Vyvanse.

Thanks for the information.
