Re-Starting Meds | ADHD Information

Has anyone stopped meds due to side effects when young only to try to restart after a few years break?

I believe we raised our sons Metadate too high when he was younger - we ended up stopping due to tics and other severe side effects.

He is now 13 and I'm contemplating starting again at a lower dose - hoping that he doesn't need as much now that he is older.

Has anyone had success in restarting meds?  Can certain side effects be outgrown?

Well we never stopped meds once we started, but Concerta was one of the first meds my daughter took at age 9. We stopped it due to side effects. At age 12 we tried it again.................still had side effects. THAT said, we kept trying and she is not having side effects form her meds she is now. I would think if he had side effects from the Metadate, try something different this time. Just becasue theya re all methylphedinate does not mean he will have the same side effects. My daughter CANNOT tolerate Concerta at all, but is doing fine on Metadate ER. It seems like it should be the same drug, extended release methylphedinate, but she is doing fine using this in conjunction with Strattera.

Well he has been on everyone made prior to 2006.  Concerta actually worked the best for him, but the effectiveness started wearing off after a while.  He couldn't toleral Adderall at all, so I wouldn't try that again.  Metadate worked, but only for a short time (4 hours or so) so the real problems started when we were giving it to him twice a day.

I guess I'm hoping since hyperactivity isn't as big an issue anymore, maybe he can get by on a lower dose and not encounter the side effects.

JUST KEEP IN MIND THAT HE MAY NEED A DIFFERENT MED NOW THAT HE IS GOING THROUGH PUBERTY, MED NEEDS SOMETIMES CHANGE.
