Any adults on Daytrana? | ADHD Information

Hi, I'm a 35-year-old female diagnosed with predominantly inattentive AD(H)D last year.  I've posted here before...under what username, I could only guess!

My psychiatrist started with the Daytrana patches since she believed that methylphenadate products were quite effective with my type of symptoms.  Mood swings, spacing out, inability to turn ideas in to action, indecisiveness, problems parenting, etc.   The positives I get from the patch are nice, but I seem to get some intense sypmtoms starting about 7-8 hours into it, which I've assumed to be the medication wearing off.  It's supposed to have a gentle come-down, but it seems that I can really feel it.  For the first week or so, I got a great night's sleep after the patch had been removed and was well out of my system.  Then really serious insomnia crept in.  Mild dizziness, too, and pretty serious anxiety....but the mood stabilization and motivation was amazing.  I kept my cool routinely.  Got things done.  I was extremely let down when I decided to stop taking it for the insomnia and dizziness.  This was a year ago.

Fast-forward to last week when I slapped on some leftover patches and had repeated good results for mood and motivation, but again with the nasty insomnia.  I chose to skip a day between patches....that day was tough.  But, no sleep does that to me regardless.  My husband got a reminder of just how good things can be with the medication, but is also discouraged by the side-effects.

Anyone else have success with insomnia and anxiety that accompanies stimulants?  Any adults on the patch?  I haven't found any so far.  I get the idea my doctor was prescribing outside the box.

I've also tried dextroamphetamine (?) and focalin with no good results.

my daughter was using Daytrana last year. Not an adult, but 13 so not a little kid either. At 5'3'' and almost 90 pounds. She was seeing some side effects, mainly lack of appetite and increased tics. We stopped it to ramp her on Strattera with full intention of re-adding the Daytrana once she was ramped. We actually never did as she did great on the Strattera alone for several months and when the tie came to add back a stimulant, she wanted a pill.

So there's an option, using Strattera either alone, or with the lowest dose of Daytrana. If you try this, I suggest using the Strattera alone for a few weeks then adding the Daytrana if you need it. Strattera works wonderfully for mainly inattentive ADHD.

Thanks Diane.  I never had actual tics, but did experience strange sensations that may have been precursors to developing tics.  In my neck, it seemed.  I also noticed the other day after removing the patch that I had an extreme need to move my feet and legs while trying to fall asleep.

I remember asking for a pill last year.

Glad your daughter found success with Strattera.
