Like randyjim said it could just be the wrong medicine for your child. Unfortunately there is lot of trial and error when it comes to meds. There is no cure all. All children are different and they react differently. Your best bet is to get your son back into the dr and try an different med. It took us a year to find the right med and dose for our DD but it was well worth it. Don't give up!!
Stay strong!!
He weighs 53lbs. We started with 10mg and after 2 weeks we went up to 15 and now we're up to 35mg....I'm thinking the problems started when we jumped up from 15
Did he go from 15to 20, then 25, then 30, 35 etc? It needs to be ramped, if he went faster, or larger jumps in dosage he may very well have problems adjusting.
He is in the target range, and could even go up a bit. his target is from 20-43 mgs.
I'm with edbson on this, 15 to 35 is a big jump. We actually went from 18 to 36 and did OK, but my daughter is older and she weighs a lot more and her target was 60. Maybe you should go to 20 or 25, he may even do ok on that dose and not need the 35.we actually went from 10-15-20-25-35. Our doctor wants us to go to 40 but i think i may try taking him back down to 10 or 15. It seemed to work well in that range. I'm also just so concerned about his long term health using these medications especially since i believe strattera was just FDA approved in 2002 so there's no real long term studies.
Has anyone tried L-Tryosine (dopamine) supplements?
Hi, if your child really seems to need meds I wouldn't give up on them yet. We went through 4-5 different ones with one son and 2 with the other. Once you find what works it all seems worth it. Prepare yourself though. Things change over time and be prepared for adjustments in dosage and/or meds as your child grows and changes. It is really a on-going prosess, so you learn to enjoy the periods when everything seems balanced.
My son was on strattera for a very long time and it did not do much for him exempt make his bipolar come out more. I would just try a different med. My son tried carbamazephine, strattera, adderral, concerta, daytrana, ritalin, risperidal, focalin, clonidine, and probably more befor we found the right meds. Keep on trying as long as he is being check by his doctor he should be fine. Good luck.Hello all,
I'm new to message boards so please forgive me if i did this wrong. My 6 yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD at the beginning of the school year. After several complaints of disruptive behavior and falling behind on his work, we decided to try medication. We went with Daytrana and noticed immediate improvements to where even his teacher was amazed at his progress. The one major downfall was that after a few weeks he began getting sick towards the afternoon and would vomit and have severe headaches. So we decided take him off daytrana and we switched to strattera which seemed to work just as well and he wasn't getting sick anymore which was great. But as we've increased the dosage (doctor advised) we've noticed that he's become very defiant and argumentative. So much so that he's been talking back to his teacher and we've been called in to meetings about it. At this point I'm thinking of just taking him off of everything completely...Has anyone experienced this?
Hi. I can't say that I've experienced this because my son was just diagnosed and we have just started medications. What I can say is that there are a bunch of of very helpful people here who will hopefully have some ideas for you. I do know that some of the meds do amplify some behaviors and perhaps this med isn't the best choice for your son--have you talked to your doctor? The other thing I would ask ....is your son in counseling? Being different, struggling, taking the meds, I'm not sure was as parents know what kind of battles our kids have internally and maybe he just needs somewhere to vent and share his struggles that's not mom or dad? My son does see a therapist (he's 5...going in to K) and it wasn't until today I realized some of the frustration he carries over after different events and meltdowns that we go through. I struggle wanting to help and not really knowing how. Just a thought. Good luck and I hope you get it worked out soon.
blessings,
Vicky
what is his weight and what dose of Strattera is he taking? Strattera is based on weight and this behavior can happen if not at the right dose or if ramped too quickly.
My daughter has been taking Strattera since November and although we still use a stimulant also it enables us to only give her 10mg of extended release so she is not having any side effects from either med. This is a child who gets side effects from all meds.
My 8 y/o was put on Strattera and was doing OK on the 25mg. When they upped it he had athe same symptoms as your child. Jon is now on FocalinXR 10mg in the morning and 5mg quick acting at noon and risperadol in the evening.
Each child is different and each med reacts differently in each child. However, here on the forum I have noticed that either the Strattera works well or causes the problems our children have had. Keep trying and have your doctor change the meds.
