This really caught my attention. My six year old still wets the bed. Is that related to the ADHD?
Rodger Wireless Bedwetting System...
I went ahead and purchased it a moment ago. I'm anxious to get this going. Our ds deserves this!! Wish us luck!! (The advice for making this work smoothly, is still appreciated if any of you feel like offering it! )
Okay, I'm officially buying an alarm today for our 7 year old ds. I have researched a few but am wanting YOUR advice. Do any of you have alarms that you recommend that you had...
Also, any advice on making this successful and smooth as possible would be LOVELY, too!!
Thanks in advance!
Hey, good luck ilovemyboys! I hope it works for you. My only advice is to have everything ready to make it really easy to get cleaned up and back into bed as quickly as possible. A removable pad is great so you don't have to wash the whole mattress pad. Give it a good two weeks before you decide whether it is working or not- I predict you will see dramatic improvement by then.
The wireless alarm is new since we dealt with this- I hope it works great for you.
I used the alarm and it worked for Jon even though we now how additional problems of him 'watering' his room in corners, in the closet, in drawers. Jon's psychologist told us that Jon needs to work on the consequences of doing this, ie he needs to clean up the carpeting with a carpet cleaner etc. But I have to say, at least with Jon, a solution was not to be had until he got a friend that mentioned his room smelled and wouldn't go into it to play. Jon asked my husband to help clean it and hasn't peepeed in it since then (all of three weeks).
As to the alarm-please don't do what we did accidentally with Jon. I forgot to leave our bedroom doors open and he was too frightened to come to our bedroom in the dark (this was when he was 5 years old). In the morning we heard a tiny tiny 'beep' 'beep' approach our bedroom and it was Jon. Seems the alarm went off, we didn't hear it and it beeped all night until it became light enough for him to come to us. The one nice result, however, was that he was trained in one day instead of several months!
Good luck with the alarm. They do work.
Randy
Last night was our first night with the alarm...Ds was so excited!
At 2:30 this morning, I woke up to my screaming 3 year old and the screaming alarm!!
I walked into our ds' room (the 7 year old) and he was sitting straight up in his bed with big, wide eyes and his blanket pulled up to his nose.
I just reassured him that this is what the alarm is supposed to do, it's so loud in order to wake him up...We walked through the process together. I changed his underwear and noticed ds hadn't pottied much at all before the alarm awoke him...he finished in the potty!! Yay!! He went straight back to bed and made it through the rest of the night!! Yay!! Great first night...
Hi - We used the "sleep dry" starchild labs alarm with my 8 year old son a few years back and it was great. I would highly recommend it. It's interesting to see that someone now has a wireless one, too !
We did a "test" with water ahead of time so that he would know what to expect when the alarm went off.
After the first night, he only ever had one accident -- I wish we had tried this so much earlier in his life, especially after trying medication, restricting his liquid intake, and spending big bucks on GoodNites. His 3 year old brother was completely potty-trained and it made him feel bad still having night-time accidents.
Best of luck to you !
My son doesn't wet the bed, but for a long while he was not making it to the toilet during the day. His doctor thought it was due to him not paying attention to the cues his body gave him, and hyperfocusing on whatever he was doing. We used ADHD behavioral modification techniques to get over that problem. Unfortunately they don't work when the child is asleep...Our ds is 7, his 3 year old brother is also potty trained. I too can't wait to make the savings from the GoodNites!! Our story starts out similar, I hope it ends similar!!
We started this the 8th...he's had two wet nights and now two dry nights!! Yay!! I'm proud and we throw him a party each morning...because both ways he's doing great. He gets up when the alarm sounds and is being a real great sport about it...the dry mornings are keeping him PROUD!!
He has been going to Vacation Bible school this week, too. This morning he said "hey, mom...I've been praying about this...It's working, isn't it!?"
Glad this is working for you guys!!!!! My son hasn't we once since he's off Concerta. I am now believing that he meds cause it. Did he wet before meds? Just curious for my own info.
Hey Wyatt's Mom,
Yes, our ds did wet the bed prior to meds. He's just struggled with it. There are a few 'bedwetters' in our family and they say it is hereditary (spelling doesn't look right! ha ha). I'm not sure if it's a side effect or not, but if he's not wetting anymore maybe it's because he's also matured. that does have an effect as well.
We are off meds for the summer and ds is doing great. He's matured quite a it since his March 2007 diagnosis...
I am glad he's doing well. I am struggling to find something natural to help wyatt focus when school starts so I don't have to put him back on. The Chiro is researching Rhodiola for me. It supposedly does what concerta does affecting dopamine levels etc. It is supposed to help with focus, anxiety and depression while being natural and safe. The chiro is checking with three different Homeopaths (spelling?) for opinions before we try it.You know, I haven't looked into it that much...it seemed like we just got thrown into everything so fast and it is a whirlwind!! Maybe we should look into it, too. I do really hate give our ds adderall xr every morning. I hate what it is, but I love that it HELPS him. If we could find a natural to do the same thing, it'd be a double blessing!
Thanks for your encouragement!!
Once I get the info and try it, if that's what we decide I will report to you guys and let you know how it goes.
I would like that...I hope you find a remedy!!
Nancy D, I'm not sure if it's directly related to ADHD (having never read that it's been confirmed) but I know a LOT of us share this 'issue'.
Randy, I'm giggling about Jon having to hear the beeping all night!!
Bless his heart!! We sleep with our doors open and I've even considered camping out in ds' room the first few nights to kind of get ds in the rhythm, so to speak. Anyway, I'm so badly hoping this helps him...he's so excited about it. We got it in this morning already so I'll have to update!! Bubbles, I really appreciate your advice as well. I think you're right...
Yay!! Here we go...
