Hi! My daughter did awful on stimualnts also. She is actually taking Strattera now too, but like you're seeing on it she still ahd some impulsiveness, so we added 10 mg of methylin ER twice a day (5:00am and noon) and she doing GREAT! Minor rebound about 5-6 hours after taking it, but really doing well. Have you thought about adding a small stim dose?
Other options we've done are Nortriptyline (Good ,but lots of drowsiness), Desipramine, liked this a LOT, but didnt work well enough for focus for us, with both she gained weight (this is a side effect we liked).
Wellbutrin is another non stim option, wokred only OK for us as inattentiveness is dd's main issue.
Again for us the combo of Strattera with small stimulant dose has the best med combo we've ever used........and we've used MANY!
There are currently studies for a new non-stimulant being done with adults. The med is called ABT-089 at this time. It is a medication normally used to help people stop smoking. They are doing the 3rd tier studies right now. I do not know if they plan on testing it for children.
My 8 year old his taking Strattera but I don't think it is working like it used to. He has always been very moody, lots of tantrums, and has tics. He has been doing this since before his ADHD diagnosis. I think he may have Tourettes and Oppositional Defiant Disorder also. I think the strattera worked at first but not anymore. He has only been taking it since April. I like the combo idea. Guanfacine (Tenex) and clonidine are two nonstimulant options besides Strattera. My child has taken guanfacine. It helps some for controlling impulsivity and hyperactivity, but nowhere near as much as the stimulant. Also, it didn't seem to help w/ focus.
