energy drinks for kids with adhd | ADHD Information
I was told to give my son a energy drink for his adhd instead of medication, it supposedly has the opposite affect, and would keep him calm. Has anyone heard of this.

Well, I know people whose son has adhd and they swear that their son's doc told them to let him have as much coffee as he likes, 'cause it's a stimulant. It seems kind of sketchy to me, though, because you can't quantify the effects or know how much is too much.I find it hard to believe a Pcyhiatrist of any worth would prescribe an energy drink for a child with a true case of ADHD. I know that caffeiene is supposed to calm some kids, but here it is the exact opposite. Our ped told us if we wanted to test the waters before giving stims we could give our son mountain dew. If it helped him then that was a good indication of whether or not stims would help. I wouldn't think it's a long term solution though. ?I agree with ebson and also , ADHD children don't need to get calm, they need to get focused. Once the child is focused they are no longer all over the map. Calming suggests a tranquilzing effect. Also, caffiene drinks are dirty stimulants that are addictive and require large quantities quite often in the course of a day to get the desired effect and the sugar rots your teeth. Pediatricians are not qualified and don't have the expertise with regard to ADHD and what really works and is safe to manage the symptoms long term. Just something to ponder.
I dunno, but there are some youtube videos that are on energy drinks but they're not good....says the stuff will kill ya.
We used to use caffine to help our daughter calm down when she was in situations where she was overly stimulated (like family get togethers and such). It works like a stimulant. Caffine has the opposite effect on ADHD children. However, I would not suggest an energy drink. The sugar in those will counter-act the caffine. I would think coffee or tea with caffine in it would work better.
